FL side impact sensor ID fault

Brand: MITSUBISHI
Type: B — Body

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Damaged or faulty front-left side impact sensor
  • Incorrect or unprogrammed replacement sensor (ID mismatch)
  • Damaged wiring harness, short, open, or chafed wires to the sensor
  • Poor connector contact, corrosion, bent pins or water ingress
  • Faulty SRS (airbag) control module or internal software/firmware mismatch
  • Intermittent power, ground, or data bus (CAN/LIN) faults

Symptoms

  • SRS / airbag warning light illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Possible disablement of front-left side airbag/curtain deployment
  • Diagnostic trouble code B1585 stored in SRS control module
  • Related SRS codes may also be present (communication/power faults)
  • No obvious drivability symptoms — vehicle runs normally

What to check

  • Read and record all SRS codes and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Visually inspect the front-left side impact sensor and its connector for damage, corrosion, or water
  • Check harness routing at door hinge/pillar for chafing or broken wires
  • Verify battery voltage and SRS fuse/relay condition
  • Confirm whether sensor was recently replaced and if it requires coding/programming
  • Check for related communication codes on CAN/LIN if applicable

Signal parameters

  • Sensor identification value reported to SRS ECU (compare expected vs reported ID)
  • Supply voltage to sensor (probe for presence of reference power when ignition on)
  • Ground continuity and resistance from sensor ground to chassis
  • Data/communication line activity (CAN/LIN frames present) if sensor uses serial bus
  • Resistance/continuity across sensor signal pins (compare to known-good if available)
  • Presence/absence of wake-up or status messages for the sensor when ignition is cycled

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: disable the 12V battery negative or follow manufacturer SRS power‑down procedure and wait specified time before touching SRS components.
  2. Use a capable scan tool to read all SRS codes and note any additional fault codes or freeze frame data.
  3. Visually inspect the FL side impact sensor, mounting, and connector. Look for corrosion, water, broken wires, or physical damage.
  4. With ignition ON (and following safety procedures), verify sensor power and ground at the connector. Check for proper reference voltage and good ground continuity.
  5. Check data/communication lines (CAN/LIN) for activity and continuity. Repair any open/short conditions.
  6. If the connector and wiring are good, attempt to read the sensor ID/value via scan tool. Compare to expected ID stored in SRS ECU or service information.
  7. If the ID is incorrect or absent, inspect whether the sensor was replaced recently. Confirm part number and whether the sensor requires programming or coding to the vehicle.
  8. If available, swap the suspect FL sensor with a known-good identical sensor (or temporarily swap with an equivalent location sensor per service info) to see if the code follows the sensor.
  9. If harness and sensor swap indicate sensor fault, replace the front-left side impact sensor with correct OEM part and program/code if required.
  10. If the code persists after replacing sensor and wiring checks, inspect or replace the SRS control module only after confirming all other causes are eliminated and following manufacturer procedures for module replacement and programming.
  11. Clear codes and perform a full system check. Verify SRS light extinguishes and no new related codes are stored.
  12. Restore battery and perform any post-repair tests recommended by the manufacturer.

Likely causes

  • Sensor connector not fully seated or corroded
  • Wire harness damaged at door hinge/pillar area
  • Replacement sensor not coded/programmed to vehicle
  • Short to ground or open circuit on sensor data/power line
  • SRS ECU expecting different sensor ID after module replacement

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Front-left side impact sensor ID mismatch or no valid identification reported to the SRS control module; sensor communication or identification failure detected.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
