Climate control switch on/off - circuit failure

Causes
- Blown fuse or faulty power supply to switch
- Open or shorted wiring between switch and HVAC/control module
- Corroded, loose or damaged switch connector or terminals
- Failed climate control ON/OFF switch assembly
- Faulty HVAC control module or Body Control Module (BCM) input circuit
- Water ingress or contamination at switch or connector
Symptoms
- Climate control ON/OFF button unresponsive or intermittent
- HVAC system will not power on or off from panel
- Switch illumination not lighting or flickering
- Related HVAC functions inoperative or behave erratically
- Instrument panel warning for climate system or stored fault lamp
- Stored B1857 code present on scan tool
What to check
- Connect a diagnostic scan tool and record freeze frame and any additional related codes
- Visually inspect fuse(s) for HVAC/climate control and replace if blown
- Visually inspect the ON/OFF switch, bezel and wiring harness for damage, corrosion or signs of water ingress
- Wiggle the switch and wiring while observing switch operation and scan tool live data for changes
- Inspect connector pins at the switch and at the HVAC/control module for corrosion, bent pins or poor contact
Signal parameters
- Reference supply to switch: ~12 V with ignition ON (verify with DVOM)
- Switch output (to HVAC module) closed: near battery voltage (~11–13 V) when ON; open: ~0 V or high impedance when OFF
- Switch contact resistance (closed): typically
- Ground continuity from switch ground to chassis:
- If circuit uses a data/logic input, verify TTL-level input around 0–5 V depending on module (consult service data)
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect scan tool, confirm B1857 and note any related codes (U-codes, other B-codes). Record operating conditions.
- Check fuses: locate and inspect fuse(s) for HVAC/climate control; replace if blown and retest. If fuse blows again, suspect short to power.
- Perform visual inspection of the switch, harness and connectors for damage or water intrusion. Repair or replace as needed.
- Backprobe the switch connector with ignition ON and measure supply voltage, ground and switch output while operating the ON/OFF switch. Compare to expected signal parameters.
- If no supply voltage, trace back to fuse/relay/ignition feed; check relay and ignition feed circuit.
- If supply present but output does not change, remove switch and bench-test or substitute a known-good switch. Verify internal switch operation and resistance continuity when actuated.
- Check continuity between switch output pin and HVAC/control module input pin. Repair any open circuits or chafed wires. Repair short to ground or battery if found.
- Inspect and test ground connections related to the HVAC module and switch. Clean and secure grounds.
- If wiring and switch check good, check module input pin voltage at the HVAC/control module. If signal absent or abnormal and wiring to switch is good, suspect module input circuit fault.
- After repairs, clear codes, cycle ignition and test system operation. Re-scan to confirm B1857 does not return.
- If intermittent faults persist, perform wiggle testing and consider module software update or replacement per manufacturer service information.
Likely causes
- Damaged wiring harness or chafed insulation near dash
- Connector pins pushed out, bent, or corroded at switch or module
- Switch contacts failed internally (wear or contamination)
- Blown fuse supplying the switch or control module
- Module software fault or internal module failure
Fault status
Status
Climate control ON/OFF switch circuit failure detected. Control module reports open, short, or intermittent condition on the ON/OFF input circuit requiring inspection of fuse, switch, wiring/connectors and module input.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
