Causes

  • Faulty SRS (airbag) control module internal circuit
  • Poor or corroded connector or ground at SRS module
  • Damaged or shorted wiring in SRS circuits or CAN bus
  • Aftermarket audio/steering repairs affecting clock spring or SRS wiring
  • Low battery voltage or intermittent supply to SRS module
  • Previous improper repairs or water intrusion in module or connectors

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light ON (SRS warning lamp) on key cycle
  • Possible disablement of airbag deployment (system disarmed)
  • Other safety restraint systems (seatbelt pretensioners) may be disabled
  • Possible stored or pending SRS DTCs in addition to B1924
  • CAN bus warning or related module communication errors

What to check

  • Read all stored codes and freeze frame data from the SRS / body control modules using a capable scanner
  • Check vehicle battery state and charge; ensure stable supply voltage (key on and cranking)
  • Visually inspect SRS control module, connectors and wiring for corrosion, damage, water intrusion or loose pins
  • Inspect steering column clock spring and connector if steering or horn work has been affected
  • Check for recent repairs that may have disturbed SRS wiring (collision repair, interior removal, aftermarket accessories)
  • Verify module grounds and power feeds (key-on 12V and good chassis ground)

Signal parameters

  • Primary supply: SRS module should have stable battery voltage present at its power input (approx. vehicle battery voltage with key on)
  • Ground: low resistance to chassis ground at SRS module mounting and ground pin
  • Internal monitor circuits: continuity and expected low resistance on squib/seatbelt pretensioner loops (typically a low-ohm path; consult OEM spec before measuring)
  • CAN/LIN bus: network activity present and module responds to diagnostic requests
  • Fault reporting: SRS module stores B1924 with corresponding freeze-frame/time stamp

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record all DTCs and freeze frame data from SRS and related modules; note any other B- or U-codes.
  2. Verify battery voltage and charge level; recharge if low and retest. Poor supply can cause false SRS faults.
  3. Perform visual inspection of SRS module, harness, connectors, and adjacent areas for damage, corrosion, or water intrusion.
  4. Check power and ground at the SRS control module with key on. Repair poor connections or grounds.
  5. Inspect clock spring and steering column harness if symptoms or prior steering work exist; measure continuity where applicable (follow OEM safety procedures).
  6. Using appropriate SRS-capable scan tool, clear DTCs and attempt to reproduce. Monitor for code return and correlate with any intermittent conditions.
  7. If wiring and connectors are good, use wiring diagrams to isolate the internal monitor circuit and measure resistance/continuity per manufacturer procedure. Do not short squib circuits; follow service manual precautions.
  8. If diagnostics point to internal module failure after eliminating wiring, supply, and communication issues, replace the SRS control module and program/configure per OEM instructions.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform SRS system self-checks and road test as required. Verify airbag lamp behavior and absence of related faults.

Likely causes

  • Corroded or loose connector at the SRS control unit
  • Open/short in SRS internal monitoring circuit or clock spring
  • Loss of power/ground to the SRS module
  • Faulty SRS control module
