Seat memory position out of reach

Causes

  • Obstruction in seat tracks (debris, foreign object, seatbelt, carpet)
  • Seat drive motor or gearbox failure
  • Seat position sensor (potentiometer/encoder) fault or misread
  • Seat memory module or seat control unit software/calibration error
  • Wiring fault or poor connector/earth to seat motor or position sensor
  • Blown fuse or loss of power to seat control circuit

Symptoms

  • Seat will not move to recalled memory position
  • Seat may stop mid-travel or not move at all when memory is selected
  • Audible motor noise without movement or repeated motor stalling
  • Steering/seat memory error message or warning lamp on instrument panel
  • Inability to save or recall seat memory positions consistently

What to check

  • Scan vehicle for stored fault codes and freeze frame data with a factory-level scanner
  • Attempt memory recall and watch/feel for seat movement; note where travel stops
  • Visually inspect seat tracks for obstructions, foreign objects or carpet trapped in sliders
  • Check fuses and relays related to seat motors and memory module
  • Listen for motor noise and note whether motor is turning freely or stalling
  • Inspect connectors, wiring looms and earth points at the seat and seat control unit for corrosion or damage

Signal parameters

  • Seat motor supply voltage: ~12V (key on/operation)
  • Seat motor current draw: typical running current
  • Position sensor output: potentiometer or encoder feedback 0–5 V or discrete encoder counts corresponding to seat travel
  • Control module keep-alive / CAN messages: seat memory recall command and position feedback (module-specific IDs)
  • Fault code stored with event counter and timestamp (scanner-readable)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a factory-level diagnostic tool and read/record all seat-related DTCs and freeze frame data. Do not clear codes yet.
  2. Reproduce the complaint: attempt memory recall while observing seat travel, listening for noises and noting the location of failure.
  3. Visually inspect seat tracks, remove any debris or obstruction and attempt full manual/electrical travel in both directions.
  4. Check fuses, relays and measure supply voltage at the seat motor connector during operation. Verify good ground at seat earth point.
  5. Probe the seat position sensor output while moving the seat manually (if safe) and during recall. Verify a smooth, continuous change in voltage or encoder counts consistent with travel.
  6. Measure motor current during operation; high current or no movement indicates mechanical bind or motor failure.
  7. Inspect connectors and wiring for corrosion, broken wires, or pin damage. Wiggle test while operating memory to detect intermittent faults.
  8. If electrical and mechanical checks are normal, perform seat control module software checks: ensure correct software, perform any required seat position relearn/calibration procedure per manufacturer.
  9. If calibration and wiring are good but seat cannot reach the stored position, consider replacing the seat motor/actuator or position sensor. Retest and verify proper operation and clear codes.
  10. After repair, perform final function test using diagnostic tool and confirm memory recall across stored positions.

Likely causes

  • Mechanical obstruction in track preventing full travel
  • Failed or weak seat drive motor drawing excessive current
  • Faulty seat position feedback sensor (incorrect voltage or open circuit)
  • Connector corrosion or intermittent wiring to seat module
  • Seat control module requires relearn/calibration after service
