Body Control Module — Vehicle Access Communication Fault
Causes
- Faulty Body Control Module (BCM) or internal BCM software/firmware fault
- Open/short/corroded wiring or poor connector for BCM, antenna, RF receiver, or door modules
- Loss of ground or low battery/unstable supply voltage to BCM or related modules
- CAN/LIN network fault (open, short to battery/ground, high resistance, bad termination)
- Failed key fob, RF receiver/antenna, or immobilizer transceiver
- Intermittent module wake/sleep timing or network sleep issues after software update
Symptoms
- Remote keyless entry or power lock/unlock inoperative or intermittent
- No response from key fob (no LED blink or vehicle feedback)
- Interior lights, dome or courtesy lights not responding with keyless actions
- Remote start, passive entry or smart access functions fail
- Dash warnings about vehicle access/immobilizer or network communication
- Other modules show communication lost codes or reduced functionality
What to check

Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect an advanced scan tool. Read and record all DTCs and freeze frame data from BCM and other network modules. Note code freeze conditions and whether code is current or historic.
- Verify battery state and charging system. Recharge or replace battery if voltage is low and re-check for communication faults.
- Reproduce symptom: operate key fob, use door handle sensor, and observe scan tool for corresponding network messages and module responses. Note if messages are absent or corrupted.
- Inspect BCM and related connectors (antenna/RF receiver, door module connectors). Unplug and re-pin-check for corrosion, bent pins, water intrusion, or poor contacts.
- Visually inspect wiring harness for damage, chafing, or repairs. Measure continuity/resistance between BCM and antenna/door modules if applicable.
- Check CAN/LIN physical layer: measure CAN_H/CAN_L voltages at BCM and at other nodes; check for correct termination resistances (~60 ohm total). Look for shorts to battery/ground.
- If intermittent, use oscilloscope or bus monitor to capture signal waveform during attempted vehicle access events to identify noise, missing frames, or corrupt levels.
- Test/replace suspect key fob or battery. If vehicle has a separate RF receiver module or antenna, test or substitute if possible.
- If wiring and peripherals check good, consider reflashing or updating BCM software/firmware per manufacturer procedure. Reprogram/recode BCM if replacement performed.
- After repairs, clear codes and perform functional tests of vehicle access, then road test or cycle vehicle to confirm fault does not return.
