Causes

  • Open or short in fuel sender 2 wiring harness
  • Corroded or loose connector or pin at the sender or instrument/module
  • Failed fuel level sender (in-tank unit)
  • Poor ground or reference voltage to the sender
  • Intermittent connection caused by wiring chafe or movement
  • Fault in instrument cluster, BCM or fuel tank module that reads the sender

Symptoms

  • Incorrect or fluctuating fuel gauge reading for tank 2
  • Fuel level warning or message on dash
  • Unable to accurately read secondary tank level
  • DTC B1A76 stored and may reappear after clearing
  • Occasional or constant gauge needle jump or stuck reading

What to check

  • Read and record trouble codes and freeze frame with a compatible diagnostic tool
  • Inspect harness and connectors at the rear/right side/underbody (location depends on model) for corrosion, water ingress, damage or loose pins
  • Backprobe connector at the sender and measure reference supply voltage, signal and ground with ignition on
  • Check resistance of the sender while moving the float (with sender removed or accessible) to confirm smooth variable resistance
  • Wiggle test wiring and connector while observing live data to reproduce intermittent failures
  • Check for related communication or BCM/instrument cluster faults

Signal parameters

  • Reference supply typically 5 V (verify with manufacturer data) present at sender supply pin with ignition ON
  • Signal voltage typically varies between ~0.5–4.5 V (model-dependent) as float moves — consult specific service manual
  • Alternate designs may use variable resistance; expected resistance should vary smoothly across travel (example ranges 0–300 Ω or 240–30 Ω depending on vehicle)
  • Good ground continuity between sender ground and vehicle chassis (
  • No intermittent open/short when moving harness and float

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner, record DTCs and live data for Fuel Sender 2; note signal behavior at rest and while moving sender (if possible).
  2. Visually inspect sender connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, water entry, or chafe; repair or replace damaged connectors/wiring.
  3. With ignition ON, backprobe the harness at the sender: verify reference voltage, signal voltage, and ground. If reference or ground missing, trace back to module.
  4. If voltages present, remove/access the sender (or use service access port) and measure resistance across sender terminals while moving the float — confirm smooth, range-appropriate change. Replace sender if resistance is open, erratic or out of specification.
  5. If signal or supply is intermittent only under movement, perform wiggle test along harness and at connector to locate intermittent break; repair wiring or secure connector.
  6. If wiring and sender test good, verify connections and operation at the receiving module (instrument cluster, BCM or fuel tank module). Check for module faults or update software per Technical Service Bulletins.
  7. After repair, clear codes, verify good live data and perform road/test tank fill to confirm correct operation and that DTC does not return.

Likely causes

  • Corroded or loose connector at the fuel sender
  • Open or shorted wiring between sender and module
  • Failed in-tank fuel sender (worn potentiometer or float)
  • Poor ground or loss of reference supply to sender

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Fuel sender 2 circuit abnormal — fuel level reading for the secondary tank is invalid or out of expected range. Check sender, wiring and connector.
