Causes

  • Open, short, or high resistance in LIN bus wiring
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged connector at BCM or LIN slave module
  • Failed or non‑responsive LIN slave device (lamp module, sensor, actuator, etc.)
  • BCM internal failure or corrupted software/calibration
  • Low battery or intermittent power/ground to BCM or LIN nodes
  • Excessive bus load, noise, or short to battery/ground on LIN line

Symptoms

  • Illumination of dash warning lamp(s) related to body systems
  • Loss or intermittent operation of LIN‑controlled functions (lamps, door modules, sensors)
  • Multiple body module communication codes present
  • Modules listed as unavailable or not responding on a scan tool
  • Possible parasitic battery drain or electrical anomalies

What to check

  • Use a capable scan tool to read all codes from BCM and related modules and note freeze frame/occurrence data
  • Check battery voltage and charging system before testing communications
  • Visually inspect LIN wiring harnesses, connectors, and grounds for damage, corrosion, or moisture
  • Confirm fuses and power/ground circuits to BCM and related LIN modules are intact
  • Monitor LIN bus messages with a scan tool that can show LIN node status (or use manufacturer diagnostic tool)
  • Probe LIN wire with an oscilloscope or logic analyzer to verify signal shape, recessive/dominant levels, and timing

Signal parameters

  • LIN bus idle (recessive) voltage ~battery voltage (measured at connector with key on)
  • LIN dominant voltage: near 0 V when driver pulls bus low
  • Baud rate/bit timing (common values e.g., 19200 or 9600 baud—verify manufacturer spec)
  • Frame synchronization/break and sync field timing
  • Message ID(s) expected from each slave node
  • Message frequency/interval for each expected LIN frame

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify and record the exact code(s) and any freeze frame or related module codes with a scan tool.
  2. Confirm battery voltage is within spec (typically 12–14.5 V) and reconnect if low; ensure good chassis and battery ground.
  3. Visually inspect LIN connectors and wiring from BCM to suspected slave devices for corrosion, bent pins, or damage. Repair any obvious faults.
  4. Check BCM power and ground circuits—verify fuse(s) and measure voltage at BCM power pin(s) and ground resistance to chassis.
  5. Use scan tool to observe LIN node status and attempt to communicate with the expected slave nodes. Note any nodes reported as non‑responsive.
  6. If available, use an oscilloscope or logic analyzer to probe the LIN line at the BCM and at the suspect slave device. Verify recessive/dominant voltages, correct break/sync patterns, and expected message timing/IDs.
  7. If one slave is suspected, disconnect it and test whether the code clears or communication restores; this isolates a bad slave versus a bus/BCM issue.
  8. Repair or replace damaged wiring, connectors, or damaged slave modules. Secure/insulate harnesses to prevent future moisture ingress.
  9. If wiring and slave devices test good, check for BCM software updates or flash the BCM per manufacturer procedure. Some faults require reprogramming to clear internal errors.
  10. If all else fails, consider replacing the BCM only after confirming wiring and network behavior; program/configure replacement per factory procedure.
  11. Clear codes and perform functional test/road test to confirm the repair and verify no reoccurrence.

Likely causes

  • Loose/damaged connector at BCM or LIN slave
  • Open or shorted LIN wiring between BCM and slave node
  • Failed LIN slave node (lamp or sensor) not responding
  • Intermittent power/ground to BCM causing bus timeout/errors
  • BCM software fault or internal failure after wiring checks

Fault status

⚠️ Status
LIN bus communication timeout/not receiving valid frames (checksum or timing errors) between BCM and LIN node(s).
