Causes

What to check

  • Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze-frame data from all modules with a capable scan tool
  • Identify which modules report communication loss or errors on the same bus
  • Visually inspect wiring harnesses, junctions and connectors for corrosion, damage or water ingress
  • Check battery voltage and grounds for the affected modules and bus master
  • Measure bus signal with a multimeter and/or oscilloscope at suspect module connectors
  • Check termination resistance across CAN high to CAN low (should be ~60 Ω total)

Signal parameters

  • LIN (single-wire) typical idle: near battery voltage (approx. VBATT). Dominant: pulled low toward 0 V by master.
  • CAN (differential) typical recessive: ~2.5 V on each CAN_H and CAN_L. Dominant: CAN_H rises and CAN_L falls (differential ~1.5 V).
  • CAN termination: approx. 60 Ω measured between CAN_H and CAN_L with power off (two 120 Ω resistors in parallel).
  • Look for clean waveform edges and consistent bit timing on oscilloscope; noise, repeated spikes or flat line indicates wiring or module failure.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a manufacturer-capable scan tool; record B1A98 and any other network/communication codes. Note which modules show comms loss.
  2. Confirm whether the fault is present in key-on and engine-running states and whether it is intermittent or permanent.
  3. Visually inspect connectors, harnesses and nearby areas for corrosion, moisture, or physical damage; repair any obvious defects.
  4. Verify supply voltage and ground at the bus master and affected modules (compare to known-good values).
  5. Backprobe the bus at the affected module connector and observe the signal with a meter/oscilloscope. Compare waveforms/voltages to expected signal_params and manufacturer references.
  6. Measure termination resistance on CAN segments (vehicle off) and check for unexpected shorts to chassis or battery.
  7. If a module is suspected, disconnect it (one at a time) and re-check the bus to see if the fault clears; this isolates a misbehaving node.
  8. If wiring is damaged, repair (splice with proper solder/joints or replace harness) and replace corroded connectors. Replace faulty module(s) if confirmed.
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform functional tests and a road test to confirm communications are restored and no further faults set.
  10. If fault persists and wiring checks out, consult manufacturer wiring diagrams and software/reprogramming bulletins; perform module reprogramming if recommended.

  • Connector corrosion or bent pins at a module on the local bus
  • Frayed harness chafe shorting to ground or battery voltage
  • Failed slave module pulling the bus to an incorrect level
  • Missing/failed termination resistor in a CAN segment
  • Low or intermittent supply/ground to the bus master (controller)
