Causes

  • Transponder chip in key is damaged or missing
  • Key not programmed or lost key entry
  • Immobiliser/BCM fault or software corruption
  • Antenna/reader (coil) around ignition barrel or start button faulty
  • Wiring or connector fault between antenna and immobiliser module
  • Interference from aftermarket alarm / remote devices

Symptoms

  • Engine will not start or cranks but then cuts out
  • Security/immobiliser warning lamp illuminated or flashing
  • Key not recognised messages on instrument cluster
  • No response from remote functions (if integrated)
  • Intermittent starting or only starts with specific key

What to check

  • Attempt to start using a known-good/spare programmed key
  • Read all stored fault codes from BCM/immobiliser with dealer-level scanner
  • Observe immobiliser/security lamp behavior during key insertion/start
  • Check for recent battery replacement, theft‑deterrent installs, or ECU replacements
  • Inspect antenna/reader connectors, wiring and earths for damage or corrosion
  • Measure antenna coil resistance and compare with specification

Signal parameters

  • Transponder carrier frequency (typical passive RFID near 125 kHz or 134 kHz depending on system)
  • Antenna/coil resistance (ohms) — compare with manufacturer spec
  • Supply voltage to antenna/reader module (approximately vehicle battery voltage while cranking)
  • Immobiliser status messages on CAN (key valid/invalid flags)
  • Read/write responses during key programming attempt (timeouts/failures)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm symptom and attempt start with a verified programmed spare key to isolate key vs vehicle.
  2. Read and record B1B15 and any related DTCs from BCM/immobiliser and engine ECU; note freeze-frame data.
  3. Inspect antenna/reader housing and wiring at ignition switch or start button for damage, corrosion, or loose connectors.
  4. Measure antenna coil resistance and supply voltage with ignition on; compare to specification. Repair wiring or connector faults.
  5. If antenna and wiring OK, check immobiliser/BCM communication on CAN bus and scan for module internal errors.
  6. Attempt key re-learn/programming using manufacturer diagnostic tool (IDS/JLR SDD or equivalent) following service procedure. Record errors returned by tool.
  7. If programming fails and antenna/communications are good, try a known-good immobiliser antenna or test module if available.
  8. Replace transponder key (or transponder insert) if key fails to respond; reprogram key to vehicle.
  9. If fault persists after replacing/repairing antenna and key, suspect BCM/immobiliser module fault — check software level and consider module repair or replacement and reprogramming.
  10. After repair/programming, clear codes and perform multiple start cycles to confirm fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Key transponder not programmed or has been erased
  • Antenna coil failure or open/short in antenna circuit
  • Damaged transponder chip inside the key (impact or moisture)
  • Connector corrosion or wiring break to immobiliser module
  • Immobiliser/BCM internal fault or corrupted key memory

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Immobiliser reports no valid response from transponder key position 13. Vehicle will inhibit engine start until a valid transponder is presented or fault is cleared; fault stored in the immobiliser/BCM.
