Causes

  • Key transponder (chip) damaged or not presenting a valid ID
  • Key battery depleted (for proximity / smart keys) preventing antenna wake-up
  • Key not programmed or lost from vehicle key set
  • Faulty immobilizer/BCM/module or corrupted key data in the module
  • Antenna ring or inductive coil (around ignition/steering column) fault or wiring/connectors poor
  • Intermittent CAN/serial communication between immobilizer and BCM/ECM

Symptoms

  • Engine will not start or no crank when using the affected key
  • Security/immobilizer warning lamp or message on dash
  • Remote/keyless entry functions inconsistent or non-functional from that key
  • Other keys may work normally (only the key with ID 20 affected)
  • Intermittent recognition or need to hold key in a specific position to start

What to check

  • Verify which key(s) trigger the code — test with known good/spare key
  • Check key fob battery voltage and replace battery if low
  • Visually inspect key for physical or water damage
  • Use OEM diagnostic tool to read stored key identifier list and confirm presence/absence of ID 20
  • Check immobilizer/BCM DTCs and freeze frame data for related communication errors
  • Inspect antenna ring/read coil wiring, connectors, and ground at the ignition/reader

Signal parameters

  • Key transponder ID / key identifier reported by immobilizer (value should match key label)
  • Antenna/read coil detect signal or voltage when key presented (LF coil wake-up)
  • Key fob battery voltage (V)
  • CAN/Serial messages between immobilizer and BCM (presence, error frames)
  • Immobilizer/module supply voltage and ground integrity
  • RF/inductive signal strength (where supported by diagnostics)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm symptom and attempt start with each available key to isolate affected key(s).
  2. Check and, if required, replace the key fob battery; retest recognition and note any change.
  3. Inspect the key for damage or corrosion. If suspect, try a known-good spare key.
  4. Retrieve DTCs with an OEM-capable scanner (Jaguar/Land Rover IDS or equivalent). Record key IDs listed by the immobilizer and related communication codes.
  5. Using diagnostics, verify the immobilizer recognizes the physical key transponder ID when presented to the reader. If the ID is missing or different, the key is not being read.
  6. Inspect antenna ring/read coil and associated wiring/connectors at the steering column/ignition reader for damage, loose pins, or corrosion. Measure coil resistance per manufacturer spec.
  7. Check module power, ground and CAN bus communication for errors. Repair any wiring or connector faults and clear codes.
  8. Attempt key re-learn/programming per factory procedure for that model. If programming fails, capture any error messages from the tool.
  9. If the key cannot be read but the antenna and wiring test good, try replacing/testing the immobilizer reader module. If module replacement is required, ensure proper programming/coding is completed.
  10. After repairs or re-programming, clear codes and perform repeated start/recognition tests with each key. Monitor for re-occurrence and check for related module software updates or technical service bulletins.

Likely causes

  • Key battery dead or weak (easy, common)
  • Specific key not programmed / removed from stored keys (common)
  • Antenna ring or transponder reader fault (medium probability)
  • Immobilizer module software or memory corruption (less common)
  • Damaged key transponder (less common, especially if key dropped or exposed to water)
