Causes

  • Key transponder ID not programmed or deleted from immobilizer memory
  • Damaged or non-functioning key transponder (broken or no coil)
  • Dead or weak key battery (for smart keys/fobs with active transponders)
  • Faulty immobilizer/secure access module or programming corruption
  • Antenna/reader ring around ignition or key slot faulty or miswired
  • Intermittent or failed CAN/vehicle network communication between modules

Symptoms

  • Engine does not start (cranks but won’t start) or no crank in some models
  • Security/immobilizer or key warning lamp on dashboard
  • Remote keyless entry functions may work while transponder is not recognized or vice versa
  • Intermittent start failures (works with one key but not another)
  • Vehicle refuses to accept a newly cut key until programmed
  • No door unlock/lock response from affected key (smart keys)

What to check

  • Scan for all stored DTCs with Land Rover diagnostic tool (SDD/IDS) and note related security/BCM/immobilizer codes
  • Try a known-good (spare) programmed key to see if the vehicle recognizes it
  • Check key battery voltage and replace if low (for smart keys/key fobs)
  • Check fuses and power supply to immobilizer and antenna/reader module
  • Inspect antenna ring/reader for damage, corrosion, loose connection or foreign objects
  • Check wiring continuity and connector pins between antenna, immobilizer and BCM/PDM

Signal parameters

  • Transponder ID: unique hex/decimal identifier transmitted by the key
  • RF carrier frequency and strength from antenna/reader (relative measurement)
  • Key battery voltage (for active/smart keys) in volts
  • CAN/diagnostic messages: immobilizer status and key ID present/absent (module-specific message IDs)
  • Immobilizer response codes: authentication accepted/rejected flags
  • Number of stored keys reported by immobilizer

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all codes from immobilizer, BCM and related modules using Land Rover diagnostic tool; clear codes and attempt test start to reproduce B1B30.
  2. Verify which key(s) are programmed: try a known-good spare key. If spare key starts the vehicle, suspect the original key transponder or programming.
  3. Inspect the physical key: check for damage, water ingress, broken transponder area, and measure internal battery voltage if applicable. Replace key battery and retest.
  4. Check antenna/reader: visually inspect around ignition barrel or keyless-entry reader for damage, then test continuity and supply voltages to the antenna module.
  5. Check power and ground to immobilizer/reader and related fuses; check connectors for corrosion or bent pins.
  6. Use diagnostic tool to read immobilizer key ID table and compare against keys presented. If key ID 28 is missing or corrupted, attempt re-learn/program key following manufacturer procedure.
  7. If key cannot be read by the antenna but is known-good, substitute/bench-test antenna module or immobilizer to isolate fault.
  8. Check network communication: confirm CAN messages are present between immobilizer, BCM and engine ECU. Repair any network faults and clear codes.
  9. If module software corruption or EEPROM fault is suspected, follow Land Rover procedures for module re-flash or replacement. After programming or replacement, reprogram keys and verify operation.
  10. Document results, clear stored DTCs and perform final verification of all keys and remote functions. If problem persists, escalate to module replacement as per manufacturer guidance.

Likely causes

  • Key not programmed / spare key used that was never paired
  • Failed or damaged key transponder (physical damage or coil failure)
  • Antenna coil or immobilizer reader issue preventing ID read
  • Low key battery preventing proper transmission of transponder signal
  • Immobilizer module software/EEPROM corruption or failed module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Key identifier 28 not recognized or failed authentication by immobilizer. Vehicle security system blocked key access until key is reprogrammed or fault repaired.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
