Page language: EN

Causes

  • Key transponder (chip) not recognized or damaged
  • Key battery weak or dead (affecting remote functions and some transponder systems)
  • Antenna ring / transponder reader fault or wiring/connectors damaged
  • Immobiliser / body control module software or configuration error
  • Key not programmed or lost from vehicle’s authorized key list
  • CAN/LIN communication fault between immobiliser and gateway/modules

Symptoms

  • Vehicle may refuse to start or crank allowed but engine immediately cuts out
  • Immobiliser or security warning lamp or message displayed
  • ‘Key not recognised’ or similar message in instrument cluster/infotainment
  • Remote locking/unlocking or keyless entry/start intermittent or non-functional
  • Only some keys start the vehicle (spare/key variation)

What to check

  • Confirm which key(s) reproduce the fault; test with known good/spare key
  • Check key battery voltage and replace if low
  • Scan all modules with manufacturer diagnostic tool (IDS/SDD/JLR Pathfinder or equivalent) and read stored security/immobiliser data
  • Inspect antenna ring/coils, wiring harnesses and connectors at ignition/reader and immobiliser module
  • Check for related CAN/LIN communication DTCs and module power/ground
  • Verify key ID list stored in immobiliser/BCM and check for recent module replacements or reprogramming events

Signal parameters

  • Transponder UID/Key ID value reported by immobiliser (numeric identifier)
  • Antenna coil signal amplitude / presence when key presented (diagnostic live data)
  • Key battery voltage (V)
  • Immobiliser status flags (locked/unlocked/learn mode)
  • CAN/LIN messages between immobiliser/BCM and engine ECU (message presence/ID)
  • DTC status (stored/active/count) and freeze frame data

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read all related DTCs with OEM diagnostic tool; note timestamps and freeze frame.
  2. Confirm behaviour with each vehicle key. If a spare key works, suspect the failing key transponder.
  3. Check/replace key battery if low and re-test.
  4. Use dealer-level tool to read key ID list in the immobiliser and confirm whether identifier 30 is present or flagged.
  5. Inspect antenna ring and wiring at the ignition or key reader for damage, corrosion, or poor connectors; repair as required.
  6. Using diagnostic tool, monitor transponder/antenna live data while presenting the key; verify UID read and signal amplitude.
  7. Check module power, ground and CAN/LIN communications; resolve any communication faults or voltage issues.
  8. If key ID missing or corrupted, follow OEM procedure to re-learn or reprogramme the key(s) into the vehicle.
  9. If immobiliser/BCM software or module has been replaced or corrupted, re-flash/update per manufacturer instructions and re-program keys.
  10. After repair or reprogramming, clear DTCs and perform verified test drives and re-check for reappearance.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or unprogrammed key transponder
  • Faulty antenna ring (coil) around ignition/fob reader or poor connector
  • Key removed from key memory after module replacement or battery disconnect
  • Intermittent communications or module failure in immobiliser or BCM

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Key identifier 30 not recognised by the immobiliser/key reader. Possible missing/failed key transponder, antenna/reader fault, or immobiliser/module communication/configuration issue.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
