Causes

  • BCM internal hardware failure or corrupted internal memory
  • Low or intermittent battery voltage to the BCM (poor B+ feed)
  • Poor ground or corroded/loose BCM connector pins
  • Faulty or shorted CAN/LIN bus or other serial communications
  • Blown fuse or failed power distribution component feeding the BCM
  • Water intrusion, physical damage, or connector corrosion

Symptoms

  • Multiple body functions inoperative or intermittent (locks, lights, windows, wipers)
  • Illumination of BCM-related warning lights or amber MIL messages
  • Loss of communication with other modules (communication errors)
  • Parasitic battery drain or BCM not entering sleep
  • Unresponsive keyless entry/fob or remote start issues
  • Erratic behavior of interior lamps, instrument cluster messages or chimes

What to check

  • Read BCM freeze frame, code history and related U-/B- codes with a capable scan tool
  • Verify vehicle battery state-of-charge and charging system voltage
  • Inspect BCM connector(s) and harness for corrosion, bent pins, water intrusion or damage
  • Check all BCM-related fuses and power distribution relays
  • Verify proper ground(s) at BCM and chassis with a low-resistance meter
  • Scan CAN/LIN bus for errors, bus-off conditions and other module communication faults

Signal parameters

  • Battery/V_BATT at BCM: ~12.0 V (engine off), ~13.5–14.7 V (engine on)
  • Ignition/switched feed present when key on (per manufacturer expectations)
  • Ground resistance at BCM ground: low (typically
  • CAN bus idle voltages: CAN_H and CAN_L ~2.5 V each (differential near 0 V idle); dominant state shows expected differential
  • LIN or single-wire bus: idle near battery feed per manufacturer spec
  • Internal supply rails (3.3 V / 5 V) present on BCM internal pins if accessible

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a manufacturer-capable scan tool. Read and record B1C00, related BCM codes and any U-codes. Save freeze frame and live data.
  2. Clear codes and attempt to re-create the fault by exercising body functions; note whether code returns and any accompanying symptoms or freeze-frame data.
  3. Check battery voltage and charging system. Ensure battery is healthy and fully charged before further testing.
  4. Inspect BCM connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, loose or pushed-back pins. Repair as needed and re-test.
  5. Verify all BCM power and ground circuits: measure supply voltages at the BCM connector with ignition off/on and engine running; measure ground resistance to chassis.
  6. Scan the CAN/LIN networks for errors, bus-off nodes and communication interruptions. If communication is lost to other modules, isolate wiring or faulty nodes.
  7. Perform wiggle testing of wiring harnesses and connectors while monitoring live data for changes or fault reappearance.
  8. If available, check for manufacturer technical service bulletins and apply any recommended software updates or reflashes to the BCM.
  9. If electrical supply, grounding, communications and software have been confirmed good but the code persists and returns immediately, consider replacing the BCM per manufacturer procedure and reprograming/configuring the new module.
  10. After repair or replacement, clear codes, verify operation of all related systems and perform a road test or full system exercise to ensure the fault does not recur.

Likely causes

  • Failed BCM module (internal electronics)
  • Open or high-resistance ground at BCM ground stud/terminals
  • Intermittent supply voltage from battery/ignition/switched feed
  • CAN bus short to battery or ground, or dominant node stuck
  • Corroded connector pins or poor mating at BCM harness
  • Aftermarket accessory or recent repair disturbed wiring or introduced fault
