Causes

  • Faulty trunk release switch (mechanical or electrical failure)
  • Open, short or high resistance in switch wiring or connector
  • Corroded or loose connector pins at switch or Body Control Module (BCM)
  • Blown fuse or poor power/ground supply to the switch circuit
  • Water intrusion or contamination of the switch or connector
  • Failed or misconfigured Body Control Module / BCM software issue

Symptoms

  • Trunk/boot does not release when using the interior/exterior switch
  • Intermittent trunk release operation or only works sometimes
  • Trunk release switch illumination may not function
  • Related warning message or icon on instrument cluster
  • Stored B1C41 DTC in diagnostic tool

What to check

  • Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze frame data with a compatible scan tool
  • Verify fuse(s) for trunk/central locking circuits are intact and correctly rated
  • Visually inspect trunk release switch and connector for corrosion, moisture, or damage
  • Wiggle the switch and harness while observing live data or attempting operation to reproduce the fault
  • Check for other body/control module communication codes that could affect inputs
  • Consult wiring diagram to identify # of wires, power/ground and BCM input pin

Signal parameters

  • Switch closed continuity: near 0 ohms (or low resistance), switch open: high/infinite ohms
  • Typical quiescent voltage at switch feed: approx. battery voltage (11–14 V) — verify with documentation
  • Switched signal to BCM: approximately 0 V (pulled to ground) when actuated or battery voltage when released depending on vehicle design — confirm with wiring diagram
  • No CAN/Circuit data from switch input when wiring open or BCM input fault present

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect scan tool, read and note all DTCs and status; attempt to reproduce B1C41 while monitoring live data for the trunk switch input.
  2. Visually inspect the trunk release switch, boot area, and connector for contamination, corrosion, or physical damage. Dry and clean if needed.
  3. Check relevant fuses and relays for the central locking/trunk circuit; replace if blown and retest.
  4. With ignition on, backprobe the switch connector: confirm feed voltage and ground presence. Note voltage change when pressing the switch. Compare to expected values from service data.
  5. Measure switch continuity with a multimeter while operating (switch should change state). If values out of range, replace the switch.
  6. If switch tests good, inspect continuity between switch connector and BCM input pin; check for short to ground or power and for high resistance. Repair wiring as required.
  7. If wiring and switch are good but signal absent at BCM, check BCM grounds and power supply. Verify BCM sees other inputs; if BCM communication issues exist, investigate network/grounding or module fault.
  8. After repairs, clear codes, perform function test multiple cycles. If code returns and wiring/switch verified, consult manufacturer service information for BCM diagnostics or software update.
  9. Document repair and recheck for DTC reappearance; consider replacement of BCM only after exhaustive wiring/switch verification and dealer/service bulletins review.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or contaminated switch terminal or connector at the trunk release
  • Open or shorted harness between trunk switch and BCM (most common)
  • Internal switch failure (stuck or high resistance)
  • Blown fuse or poor ground connection affecting the switch circuit

Fault status

⚠️ Status
B1C41 — Trunk release switch 1: invalid or missing circuit signal detected. Inspect switch, wiring and BCM input; repair and retest.
