LAND ROVER B — Body

Position switch of the front washer

Type: B — Body

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Failed or intermittent front washer position switch
  • Damaged or corroded connector or wiring harness to the switch
  • Poor ground or power supply to the switch
  • Mechanical binding or obstruction of the washer mechanism preventing switch actuation
  • Faulty body control module / software or lost communication

Symptoms

  • Warning message or lamp related to washer/park on dash
  • Front washer reported incorrectly (not parked or stuck in an intermediate position)
  • Washer pump/wiper park logic may not operate correctly
  • Washer may not dispense or may not stop in the correct position
  • Intermittent or permanent diagnostic trouble code stored

What to check

  • Retrieve full freeze-frame and live data with a compatible diagnostic tool (Jaguar/Land Rover SDD/IDS or equivalent)
  • Visually inspect the front washer switch, harness, and connector for corrosion, damage, or water ingress
  • Check related fuses and power supply circuits
  • Back-probe the connector and measure reference voltage, switched signal, and ground while operating the washer mechanism
  • Operate the washer mechanism manually (if possible) and observe switch state changes in the diagnostic tool
  • Wiggle-test the wiring harness while observing live data to reproduce intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Switch state should toggle between two defined states (open/closed) when mechanism moves
  • Expect continuity (low resistance) in the closed state and open circuit (OL/high resistance) in the open state
  • Signal line should show reference voltage when active or near 0 V when pulled to ground depending on circuit design
  • Stable reference voltage supply (typically battery voltage or regulated feed) and good ground
  • No unexpected voltage drop under operation

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all related DTCs and live data using a compatible diagnostic tool. Note if code is current or historic.
  2. Visually inspect the front washer switch, mounting, mechanism and wiring harness for obvious damage, corrosion, or water ingress.
  3. Verify fuses and power supply to the washer circuit. Repair any blown fuses or bad supply immediately.
  4. With connector accessible, back-probe and check for reference voltage and ground at rest and while actuating the washer mechanism. Confirm switch toggles.
  5. Check continuity between the switch and module connector; repair any open, short to ground, or short to voltage found.
  6. If wiring and supply are good, bench-test or replace the position switch and re-check operation.
  7. If new switch does not resolve the issue, inspect the washer mechanism for mechanical binding that prevents switch actuation.
  8. If wiring and switch are good, check the body control module input and communication. Re-flash or replace module only after confirming upstream components.
  9. Clear codes, perform function test and road/operation test to confirm repair and that the code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at the front washer position switch
  • Failed position switch (worn contacts or water ingress)
  • Broken or chafed wiring between switch and control module
  • Fuse or supply circuit intermittent
  • Mechanical jam preventing switch movement
