Causes

  • Defective rear washer/wiper switch (mechanical/electrical failure)
  • Open, short to ground or short to battery in switch wiring or connector
  • Corroded or loose connector at the switch or BCM
  • Blown fuse or poor power/ground supply to the switch/BCM
  • Faulty Body Control Module (rare)
  • Water ingress or contamination of switch assembly

Symptoms

  • Rear washer does not operate when switch is activated
  • Rear wiper/washer warning message or message indicator
  • Intermittent or no response from rear washer pump
  • Switch position not recognized by vehicle (no dashboard indication)
  • Possible simultaneous faults for rear wiper/washer functions

What to check

  • Scan vehicle and read stored/freeze-frame data; note occurrence and conditions
  • Visual inspection of rear washer switch, wiring harness, and connectors for damage or corrosion
  • Check fuse(s) related to washer/wiper circuits
  • Use a scan tool to view live data for rear washer switch input/status
  • Backprobe switch connector and measure reference voltage and switch signal with ignition on
  • Check continuity from switch connector to BCM pin; inspect for shorts to ground or battery

Signal parameters

  • Reference/power supply (with ignition ON): typically battery voltage (~12 V) present at switch feed
  • Switch closed: signal should change state (either pulled to ground or to supply depending on design). Expect near 0 Ω across switch when actuated
  • Switch open: high resistance (open circuit) or infinite Ω between switch terminals
  • BCM input: sees a clear logic change when switch is operated (voltage close to 0 V or near battery voltage depending on circuit)
  • No continuous current draw when switch is not operated (no parasitic draw)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record DTCs and live data with an appropriate scan tool; note occurrence frequency and conditions.
  2. Attempt to reproduce the fault by operating the rear washer switch while observing live data for the switch input.
  3. Perform visual inspection of switch, rear hatch trim, harness grommets and connectors for corrosion, water ingress, broken wires or physical damage.
  4. Check related fuses and relays; replace any blown fuses and re-test.
  5. Backprobe the switch connector: with ignition ON, confirm reference supply voltage present at feed pin and observe signal change when switch is pressed.
  6. Measure switch resistance: confirm near 0 Ω when actuated and open/very high resistance when released. Replace switch if out of specification.
  7. Check continuity and resistance between switch connector and BCM input pin; repair any opens or high-resistance circuits.
  8. If wiring is good, apply a known good signal to the BCM input (ground or battery as appropriate per wiring diagram) to confirm BCM responds and washer pump operates. If BCM does not respond, suspect BCM or additional wiring/ground issues.
  9. Inspect/clean connectors and apply dielectric grease after repair. Replace switch or harness sections as required.
  10. Clear codes, cycle ignition and test system operation multiple times; road-check and re-scan to confirm the fault does not return.
  11. If repair fails to clear code and wiring is verified, consult Land Rover service literature for module programming updates or further BCM diagnostics.

Likely causes

  • Faulty switch contacts or internal switch wiring
  • Corroded/dirty connector at the rear washer switch
  • Broken or chafed wiring between switch and BCM
  • Open or high-resistance ground or fused power feed
  • Intermittent connector due to water intrusion

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Rear washer switch circuit fault: abnormal/open/short or implausible signal detected by BCM.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-1.5 hours
