Causes

  • Open or short in relay coil circuit wiring
  • Corroded or loose connector at rear lamp or relay
  • Failed relay or relay coil
  • Poor ground or power supply to the relay
  • Water ingress or damage to rear lamp lens assembly
  • Faulty body control module (BCM) or module output driver

Symptoms

  • Rear lamp(s) inoperative or intermittent (brake, tail, reverse, or indicator depending on circuit)
  • Related dashboard warning or lamp-on message
  • DTC stored and possibly illuminating service indicator
  • Possible parasitic battery drain if circuit is shorted
  • Erratic operation of related lighting functions

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze-frame and live data from diagnostic tool; note which rear lamp function is affected
  • Visual inspection for damaged wiring, crushed harness, or signs of water ingress at rear lens and relay/fuse box
  • Inspect and reseat connectors at rear lamp, relay block and BCM; check for corrosion or bent pins
  • Check relevant fuses and swap or test the relay in question
  • Measure voltage and ground at the relay coil connector with key ON and when lamp function is activated
  • Check relay coil continuity with multimeter (ignition OFF) and compare to specification or expected low-ohm value

Signal parameters

  • Relay coil supply voltage: ~battery voltage (~12 V) present at relay supply terminal when power is applied
  • Relay coil control signal: switched to ground or +12 V by BCM when the lamp function is requested (verify with scope or multimeter)
  • Coil continuity: relay coil should show continuity (low ohms) — open = infinite/very high resistance, short to chassis = near 0 or abnormal reading
  • No-load lamp circuit current: abnormal high current may indicate shorted lamp/assembly

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: Park vehicle, apply parking brake, turn ignition OFF and disconnect battery if performing connector/wiring repairs.
  2. Connect a diagnostic scanner, read B1C83 and related codes, note freeze-frame/live data and attempt to reproduce the fault.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of the rear lamp assembly, harness, connectors, and relay/fuse box for damage or moisture.
  4. With ignition ON, activate the affected lamp function and verify if voltage appears at the relay supply and relay control terminals using a DVOM.
  5. With ignition OFF, remove relay and measure coil resistance across the coil terminals; compare to manufacturer spec or check for continuity. If coil is open or shorted, replace relay.
  6. Backprobe the connector/wiring to check for continuity between relay, BCM and rear lamp. Repair any open/corroded connections or damaged insulation.
  7. Check ground integrity for the rear lamp assembly (measure resistance to chassis ground). Clean or repair ground if high resistance found.
  8. If wiring and relay test good, check BCM output driver using diagnostic tool or oscilloscope; if BCM does not command the relay as expected, suspect module fault and follow manufacturer procedures for BCM testing/replacement.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and retest all lighting functions; drive-cycle as required to confirm no return of DTC.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or chafed wiring harness to rear lamp relay
  • Corroded connector pins at rear lamp or relay/fuse box
  • Stuck or internally failed relay coil
  • Intermittent ground connection at lamp or chassis
  • Water-damaged rear lens assembly causing short

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Rear lens relay coil circuit fault detected — possible open, short or intermittent connection in relay coil/wiring or failing relay. Lamp operation may be affected.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
