Rotating motor circuit of lighthouse

Causes

  • Open or short in power or ground supply to the rotating motor
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector/pins at motor or control module
  • Failed rotating motor (armature, brushes or internal wiring)
  • Seized or mechanically obstructed motor/gearbox
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying the motor
  • Faulty headlamp control module or body control module (BCM)

Symptoms

  • Adaptive/rotating headlamp does not rotate or moves intermittently
  • Warning lamp or message on dash related to headlamp/adaptive lighting
  • Clicking, grinding or no noise from the motor during operation
  • Stored DTC B1D65 and possibly related DTCs
  • Reduced or incorrect beam direction from headlamp

What to check

  • Use a diagnostic scanner to read all stored and pending codes and view live data/actuator tests for the headlamp motor
  • Visual inspection of motor, harness and connectors for corrosion, damage, pin push-out or water ingress
  • Check related fuses and relays for continuity and correct operation
  • Backprobe motor connector while commanding motor to operate; check for supply voltage, ground and control signal
  • Undertake a wiggle test of wiring while commanding motor to identify intermittent faults
  • Bench-test the motor removed from vehicle (if safe and possible) to confirm operation and current draw

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage to motor: ~12 V when motor commanded (vehicle battery voltage with engine running)
  • Ground return: solid ground continuity to chassis or module ground
  • Control signal: may be switched 12 V or PWM from module — check oscilloscope for duty cycle when commanded
  • Motor coil resistance: expected continuity; open circuit indicates broken winding, near-zero indicates short (refer to OEM spec)
  • Running current: increases under load; abnormally high current suggests mechanical seizure or internal short

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner. Record all codes and attempt an actuator test for the rotating motor. Note live data values and whether the module is commanding the motor.
  2. Visually inspect headlamp assembly, motor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion or water ingress. Repair any obvious issues.
  3. Check fuses/relays in the motor supply circuit. Replace any blown fuse and verify relay operation.
  4. With connector attached, backprobe the motor supply and ground while commanding the motor. Verify a stable ~12 V supply and ground during the command. If no supply, trace back to fuse/relay/module.
  5. If supply and ground are present but motor does not run, remove the motor and bench test with a fused 12 V supply to verify rotation and measure current draw. Compare to acceptable ranges in the service manual.
  6. If motor fails bench test (open/short/high draw) replace motor/gearbox assembly. If motor works on bench, inspect harness continuity to control module and repair any faults.
  7. If wiring and motor are good but no control signal is present, test module output pin with oscilloscope/multimeter and verify module software/calibration. Consider module replacement only after wiring and motor proven good.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and perform functional check and calibration procedures per workshop manual. Confirm fault does not return and headlamp operates correctly.

Likely causes

  • Damaged wiring or poor connector contact at the motor (most common)
  • Failed motor (open/short or excessive draw)
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay in the motor supply circuit
  • Control module output fault or missing command signal

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Rotating motor circuit fault detected for lighthouse (rotating/adaptive headlamp). Possible open/short/intermittent circuit, motor failure, or control module issue. Inspect wiring, connectors, fuses, motor and module.
