Causes

  • Damaged or chafed wiring harness to left headlight
  • Corroded, loose, or contaminated connector at headlight
  • Failed rotary feedback sensor inside left headlight assembly
  • Water/moisture ingress in headlight connector or housing
  • Poor ground or supply to the sensor
  • Faulty headlight control module / body control module (BCM)

Symptoms

  • Headlamp leveling/auto-aim not working or stuck in one position
  • Instrument cluster message or warning about headlamp/aiming fault
  • Adaptive/headlight swivel functions inoperative
  • Illuminated fault or service lamp related to lighting
  • Uneven headlight aim or visible headlight flicker during adjustment
  • Stored DTC B1D68 (may be accompanied by other lighting DTCs)

What to check

  • Scan vehicle and record all stored, pending and freeze-frame codes
  • Visually inspect left headlamp connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, pin push-out or water ingress
  • Wiggle harness and connector while observing live data or MIL to reproduce fault
  • Check fuses related to headlamp/BCM and ensure proper supply voltage
  • Check ground continuity from headlamp connector to chassis
  • Measure sensor supply voltage, ground and signal at the headlight connector with ignition on

Signal parameters

  • Sensor supply/reference: typically ~5 V reference (may vary by model) — verify with service data
  • Sensor signal output: variable voltage that changes with headlamp position (commonly ~0.5–4.5 V for potentiometer types)
  • Hall/encoder types: digital pulses, frequency or PWM may be used instead of analog voltage — check live data
  • Expected continuity: sensor ground should show low resistance to chassis (< a few ohms)
  • No short to battery (no constant 12 V on signal) or short to ground on signal line when moving actuator

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all codes using an OEM-capable diagnostic tool; note any related lighting/BCM codes.
  2. Visually inspect the left headlamp assembly, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion or water. Repair any obvious issues.
  3. With connector connected, probe the sensor connector pins to confirm reference voltage, ground and signal while ignition is ON. Compare values to expected ranges in service data.
  4. Operate headlamp level/position motor via diagnostic tool and observe live sensor output. Signal should change smoothly with position; intermittent/no change indicates sensor or wiring fault.
  5. Perform continuity and resistance checks from the headlight connector back to the BCM/power distribution for supply, signal and ground. Repair any opens or shorts.
  6. If wiring and connectors are good but sensor output is out of range or non-responsive, remove/replace the left headlight assembly or sensor per manufacturer procedure.
  7. After repair/parts replacement, clear codes, perform headlamp calibration/adaptation using the diagnostic tool if required and road-test to confirm repair.
  8. If fault persists after replacing headlight and repairing wiring, investigate BCM/software updates or module replacement with OEM guidance.

Likely causes

  • Wiring/connector damage at headlight (most common)
  • Failed/contaminated connector pins allowing intermittent signal
  • Rotary feedback sensor (potentiometer/Hall sensor) inside assembly
  • Moisture ingress causing intermittent shorts or corrosion
  • Less likely: control module fault or corrupted calibration data

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Left headlight rotary feedback sensor circuit — electrical/signal fault detected. May disable automatic leveling/aiming and display a lamp/notice.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-2.5 hours
