Causes

  • Open, shorted or corroded wiring between sensor and control module
  • Poor or corroded connector at headlight or module
  • Failed headlight rotation/position sensor (potentiometer or Hall sensor)
  • Failed headlight actuator/motor or mechanical binding
  • Faulty body/lighting control module or software fault
  • Water ingress or physical damage to headlamp assembly

Symptoms

  • Adaptive headlight/steering-linked function disabled for right lamp
  • Dashboard warning message or lamp for headlight system
  • Right headlight does not move or moves incorrectly during aim/level procedures
  • Asymmetric beam pattern or incorrect aim on right side
  • DTC stored and may reappear after clearing

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and full DTC list; note related codes for left headlamp or communications
  • Visually inspect right headlamp assembly, connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion or water ingress
  • Check fuses and grounds related to headlamp/lighting control module
  • Use OEM diagnostic tool to command headlight rotation/aim and watch for movement and feedback
  • Backprobe sensor connector while commanding actuator to observe signal behavior
  • Wiggle test wiring and connector while monitoring live data for intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Typical sensor arrangement: 3-wire (5V reference, ground, signal) or 2-wire potentiometer—expect stable analog voltage proportional to angle
  • Expected signal voltage (typical): ~0.5–4.5 V across sweep (model dependent) when actuator moves
  • If CAN/serial feedback is used, expect position message updates when commanding actuator; loss of updates indicates fault
  • Resistance or continuity between sensor ground and chassis ground should be near zero; reference supply should be present when ignition on

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record DTC(s) and freeze-frame data with a diagnostic scan tool.
  2. Visually inspect right headlamp, seals, connector and harness for damage, corrosion or moisture. Repair any obvious issues.
  3. With ignition ON, backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage present, good ground and that signal voltage changes while commanding headlight rotation via diagnostic tool.
  4. Command the actuator/rotation through the diagnostic tool. Observe mechanical movement and the feedback signal simultaneously. Note any binding or no movement.
  5. Perform wiggle tests on wiring and connector while monitoring signal to find intermittent faults.
  6. If no proper signal but reference/ground present, disconnect sensor and measure sensor resistance (if applicable) per service data; replace sensor/actuator if out of spec.
  7. If signal and sensor check OK, inspect/repair wiring between headlamp and control module; check for shorts to voltage or ground.
  8. If wiring and sensor are good, investigate body/lighting control module: check for related communication errors (U-codes) and consider module reflash or replacement per manufacturer guidance.
  9. After repair or replacement, clear DTCs, perform headlamp aim calibration/relearn if required, and test drive/operate system to confirm the fault is gone.

Likely causes

  • Damaged wiring or connector at the right headlamp
  • Failed position feedback sensor inside the headlamp actuator
  • Seized or mechanically restricted headlamp swivel motor
  • Intermittent connector/poor ground causing intermittent signal

Fault status

⚠️ Status
