Causes

  • Blown fuse or tripped relay powering the subwoofer/amplifier
  • Damaged or disconnected wiring/connector between subwoofer and amplifier/head unit
  • Subwoofer (speaker) internal failure or shorted voice coil
  • External amplifier/module failure or loss of internal power/ground
  • Audio/control module software fault or corrupted calibration
  • CAN/diagnostic bus communication error between audio modules

Symptoms

  • No bass output from subwoofer or no sound at low frequencies
  • Distorted, intermittent or buzzing subwoofer output
  • Audio system warning message or lamp relating to subwoofer/infotainment
  • DTC B1D73 stored in audio or body control module
  • Loss of subwoofer level control in infotainment or uneven channel balance

What to check

  • Use a capable factory-level scan tool to read B1D73 and any related audio/body/CAN codes; record freeze-frame/live data
  • Visually inspect subwoofer, amplifier and connectors for damage, corrosion or water ingress
  • Check fuses and relays that supply the subwoofer/amplifier (inspect fuse rating and continuity)
  • Confirm supply and ground at the amplifier with a DVOM; back-probe connector while operating audio test tone
  • Measure speaker DC resistance with speaker disconnected from amplifier (compare to specification)
  • Listen for distortion or rattle while commanding a test tone from the diagnostic tool

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage to amplifier: ~12–14.5 V (key on/run)
  • Ground continuity: near 0 Ω between amplifier ground and chassis
  • Speaker DC resistance: typically 2–8 Ω (refer vehicle-specific spec)
  • Audio input signal (AC) present when playing tone: measurable mV–V depending on source
  • Amplifier enable/ignition feed: 0 V (off) or battery voltage (on)
  • CAN bus differential voltage: nominal ~2.5 V on each CAN line (verifiable with diagnostic tool)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a factory-level scan tool; read and record all stored and pending codes and live data for the audio/subwoofer module.
  2. Check for technical service bulletins or software updates related to audio/subwoofer systems for the specific Land Rover model and year.
  3. Verify fuses/relays: inspect and test continuity of fuses supplying the amplifier/subwoofer; replace if faulty.
  4. With ignition on, measure supply and ground at the amplifier connector. If supply or ground missing, trace wiring to fuse/relay and repair.
  5. Command a subwoofer test tone or actuator test from the scan tool while monitoring amplifier input/output signals and module status.
  6. Disconnect the subwoofer speaker and measure DC resistance. If open or shorted, replace the speaker.
  7. If supply/ground and speaker resistance are correct, check amplifier outputs for audio signal while playing source audio; if no output, suspect amplifier/module failure.
  8. Inspect and repair any damaged wiring, connectors or grounds. Clean corroded connectors; use dielectric grease as required.
  9. If wiring and hardware test good, consider reflashing or reprogramming the audio/control module per manufacturer procedures, then clear codes and retest.
  10. If code persists after the above, replace the failed component per service manual (amplifier, subwoofer, or control module) and verify repair by clearing codes and performing functional test.

Likely causes

  • Open or shorted speaker wiring/connector
  • Failed subwoofer amplifier (no output or no enable)
  • Blown fuse supplying amplifier power or accessory feed
  • Poor ground at amplifier/subwoofer
  • Intermittent wiring fault (pinched/abraded cable)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
A fault has been detected in the microwave subwoofer audio system. The subwoofer may be disabled or operating with reduced functionality until the fault is addressed.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
