Page language: EN

Causes

  • Poor electrical connection at rollover protection module or left-side sensors/actuators
  • Damaged wiring harness (open, short to ground, short to battery, or corrosion)
  • Faulty left rollover sensor or actuator (mechanical/hydraulic/pyrotechnic device)
  • Rollover protection control module internal fault
  • Loss of CAN/communication between modules (airbag/BCM/ABS/ESP)
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying power to the ROPS circuit

Symptoms

  • Airbag / SRS warning light illuminated; rollover or ROPS warning/message in instrument cluster
  • Left rollover protection may not deploy or may be disabled
  • Possible related faults stored for airbags, stability control or communication
  • Vehicle may refuse to enter certain safety modes until fault cleared/diagnosed

What to check

  • Read all SRS/airbag and body control module codes and freeze-frame data with a dealer-level scan tool
  • Visual inspection: left-side rollover hardware, wiring harnesses, connectors and mounting points for damage or water ingress
  • Check fuses/relays for the ROPS/airbag power supply
  • Verify battery voltage (stable 12V+) during testing and module wake-up
  • Check CAN bus health (bus voltages, termination, other modules reporting)
  • Do not attempt to deploy or physically test pyrotechnic actuators — follow OEM safety procedures

Signal parameters

  • Module supply: battery voltage present at module supply pins (approx. 11–14 V with engine off/on)
  • Reference / sensor supply: factory reference (commonly 5 V or specified vehicle reference) present and stable
  • Ground continuity:
  • CAN bus idle voltages: approx. 2.5 V on CAN High and CAN Low (verify with service data)
  • Sensor outputs: rollover/accel/gyroscope outputs reported via module/CAN (refer to service manual for expected mV/V or g outputs)
  • Squib/actuator resistance (if applicable): consult service data before measuring; many deployment devices require specific handling

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM-level diagnostic tool and read all fault codes in the SRS, ABS/ESP and body modules. Note freeze-frame and related codes.
  2. Inspect left-side rollover hardware, harness, connectors and grounding points for corrosion, damage, water ingress or loose pins.
  3. Verify primary power and ground to the rollover/airbag control module and check relevant fuses/relays. Record voltages.
  4. Check CAN communication: verify module appears on network and compare live data/telemetry for rollover sensor inputs (roll rate, lateral accel, wake/sleep states).
  5. Perform wiring continuity and short tests between the module and left-side sensors/actuators (power, signal, ground). Repair any open/short circuits.
  6. If wiring and connectors are good but the module or sensor shows out-of-range/absent data, consult service procedures for module/sensor replacement or repair. Confirm part numbers and recall/TSB info.
  7. After repair or replacement, clear codes and perform required initialization, calibration or module programming with OEM tool. Re-run diagnostics and road test per service manual.
  8. If intermittent or unexplained communications faults remain, check for software updates, perform full network scan, and escalate to manufacturer-level support if needed.

Likely causes

  • Connector corrosion or loose connector at left rollover module/sensor
  • Wiring damage (pinched/chewed/abraded harness on left side)
  • Faulty left-side rollover sensor/module
  • CAN bus communication fault between airbag/vehicle dynamic control modules
