Causes

  • Module internal failure (electronics or backlight driver)
  • No power or low supply voltage to the display (blown fuse, bad ignition/switched feed)
  • Poor ground connection at the module
  • Damaged, corroded or loose connector pins at the display
  • Open/short in the wiring harness between the display and main head unit/CAN network
  • Loss of CAN/LIN communication or bus biasing fault

Symptoms

  • Left rear display is blank or intermittently goes out
  • No audio/video from left rear entertainment screen
  • Rear display not recognised in infotainment menus
  • Warning or information message related to rear display or rear entertainment
  • Other modules showing communication faults or CAN-related DTCs
  • Possible battery drain if module is stuck awake

What to check

  • Read all DTCs from all modules with a dealer-level scan tool and capture freeze frame/live data
  • Visually inspect the left rear display connector and wiring for corrosion, damage or water ingress
  • Check relevant fuses and relays for the rear display/rear entertainment circuit
  • Verify battery and switched supply voltages at the display connector with ignition off/on as appropriate
  • Check module ground continuity to body/chassis ground
  • Confirm the module is present and communicating on the CAN/LIN network with a diagnostic tool

Signal parameters

  • Module battery/supply (VBAT): ~11–14.5 V with vehicle battery healthy
  • Switched/ignition feed: 0 V (off) or ~11–14.5 V (on) depending on key/retained power state
  • Logic supply (if present): typically ≈5 V rail for display electronics (verify against wiring diagram)
  • Ground: near 0 Ω continuity to chassis ground; voltage ≤0.2 V under light load
  • CAN bus idle voltages: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (recessive); dominant state CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V
  • Typical CAN differential when active: ≈2.0 V

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable diagnostic scanner, read and record all stored and pending codes from all modules; note freeze-frame data.
  2. Confirm whether the left rear display module appears on the network and whether it returns any live data or status.
  3. Visually inspect the display, connector, and harness for corrosion, bent pins, water damage or mechanical damage; repair any visible damage.
  4. Check related fuses/relays and verify battery/switched power at the module connector pins; repair or replace any blown fuses or interrupted feeds.
  5. Verify ground integrity for the module (measure resistance to chassis ground); repair poor grounds.
  6. Probe CAN/LIN signals at the module connector with a multimeter or oscilloscope: check idle voltages and signal activity; trace and repair wiring faults or bus termination issues.
  7. If wiring and power are OK and communication is intermittent or absent, attempt a module reset/energy cut (disconnect battery per manufacturer procedure) and re-scan.
  8. Check for available software/firmware updates or known service bulletins; if applicable, perform reflash/reprogramming per factory procedures.
  9. If diagnostics indicate a failed module (internal faults, no response with correct power/comm present), replace the left rear display module and configure/program it as required.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform full system check to confirm normal operation and that no related DTCs return.

Likely causes

  • Faulty or unresponsive left rear display module
  • Connector corrosion or poor pin contact at the display
  • Power feed fuse or switched supply open
  • CAN bus communication fault (wiring or bus termination issue)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Left rear display module fault — communication/power or internal failure detected. Module may be unresponsive or reporting implausible data.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-2.5 hours
