Causes

  • Loose or corroded connector at headphone panel
  • Damaged wiring (open, short to ground or short to battery) in the panel circuit
  • Faulty headphone panel module (internal electronics)
  • Blown fuse or poor fuse contact for the entertainment circuit
  • Water ingress or physical damage to the panel or connector
  • Loss of communications on the vehicle network (LIN/CAN) or a module addressing/configuration error

Symptoms

  • No audio or no headphone operation from Headphone Panel 1
  • Intermittent or complete loss of rear entertainment functions
  • Warning or message on infotainment screen about rear audio/device
  • Stored B1D84 fault present in module scan
  • Lights/IR on panel not functioning

What to check

  • Read and record all stored and pending codes with a diagnostic scan tool; note freeze frame or occurrence conditions
  • Visually inspect headphone panel, connector and wiring for corrosion, water ingress, bent pins or physical damage
  • Check related fuses and fuseholder contacts for continuity and good seating
  • With ignition on, verify supply voltage at the panel power pin(s) and confirm a good ground at the harness connector
  • Use a scan tool to check whether the entertainment/headphone module is present on the network and able to communicate
  • Wiggle test the harness while monitoring the code list and module communications for intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Switched supply voltage to headphone panel (approx. vehicle battery/ignition supply)
  • Ground continuity/resistance to chassis ground (low ohms expected)
  • Presence of module responses/messages on vehicle network (LIN/CAN) using a diagnostic tool
  • Connector pin continuity between panel connector and the corresponding module or junction (ohms)
  • Any error/communication counters reported by the body or entertainment modules

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool and read all modules; record B1D84 and any related codes
  2. Confirm module identity on the bus and check for communication faults or timeouts
  3. Perform a visual inspection of the headphone panel, connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, water damage or physical impact
  4. Check fuses for the entertainment/headphone circuit and verify fuse voltage in place with ignition on
  5. Measure battery/switched voltage at the panel connector power pin and verify ground continuity to chassis
  6. If vehicle uses LIN/CAN to the panel, monitor the bus with a scan tool or scope to confirm network activity and frame contents for that module
  7. Perform a wiggle test on the harness while observing live data/communications to reproduce the fault if intermittent
  8. If wiring and power/ground are good but communication is absent or erratic, swap in a known-good headphone panel (or substitute known-good module if available) to confirm module fault
  9. If replacement required, follow manufacturer procedure for module replacement and programming; clear codes and perform functional test
  10. After repair, clear codes and verify the repair by cycling ignition and driving until the system would normally generate the fault conditions

Likely causes

  • Loose/corroded connector or poor ground at headphone panel
  • Water ingress / physical damage to panel or connector
  • Open/short in the harness to the panel
  • Faulty headphone panel module
