Causes

What to check

  • Read all related DTCs and freeze frame data with a manufacturer-level scan tool
  • Check for accompanying network (CAN/LIN) communication DTCs
  • Visually inspect mirror, door wiring and connectors for corrosion or damage
  • Verify fuses and relays for mirror circuits
  • Operate mirror functions while monitoring power and ground at the mirror connector
  • Check for water entry signs around mirror and door

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage at mirror connector (expected ≈12V with ignition on)
  • Ground continuity from mirror connector to chassis ground (
  • Resistance or continuity of actuator motors and heater element per service spec
  • CAN bus voltage levels (~2.5V dominant idle per line) and network fault frames
  • LIN bus wake/signal activity (if mirror uses LIN) during switch operation
  • Presence and content of module messages/IDs for mirror module on network

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner and record all related fault codes and temporary data. Note whether code is current or historic.
  2. Attempt mirror operation while monitoring for DTC set/clear and any change in network messages.
  3. Visually inspect mirror assembly, loom through door hinge area and corresponding connectors for corrosion, water ingress or damaged wires.
  4. With ignition on, verify battery voltage and ground at the mirror connector. Backprobe terminals; check for ignition-switched power, constant power and ground presence.
  5. Measure resistance of mirror motors/heater compared to manufacturer specifications. Check for open/short circuits.
  6. If communication-related, use scope or bus diagnostic to verify CAN/LIN activity and message integrity between mirror and BCM/door module.
  7. Wiggle test wiring and connectors while operating mirror to try to reproduce fault. Repair any damaged wiring or connectors.
  8. If wiring and mirror hardware check good, try known-good mirror assembly or swap identical modules (if available) to isolate module vs. wiring/BCM.
  9. If module replacement is required, ensure correct programming and coding per manufacturer procedures, then clear codes and retest.
  10. After repairs, road test and verify mirror functions, and confirm no reoccurrence of DTC.
