Causes

  • Failed or degraded BCM hardware (processor, memory, internal power regulator)
  • Corrupted or failed BCM firmware/software
  • Low or intermittent battery voltage or poor ground to BCM
  • Corroded/damaged BCM connector or wiring
  • Water ingress or physical damage to BCM
  • Excessive electrical noise or short to voltage/ground on BCM circuits

Symptoms

  • Multiple body electrical systems inoperative or intermittent (lights, locks, wipers, interior functions)
  • Keyless entry, remote start or immobilizer faults
  • Erratic behavior of interior lighting or instrument cluster messages
  • Loss of communication with BCM on scan tool (U-codes or network errors)
  • Parasitic battery drain or inability to enter sleep mode
  • Illumination of general warning lamp or multiple system fault indicators

What to check

  • Connect a diagnostic scan tool and confirm B2070 and any related DTCs; record freeze frame and permanent codes
  • Check vehicle battery voltage at rest and with ignition on (should be ~12–14.5 V)
  • Visually inspect BCM connector and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, contamination or water damage
  • Verify BCM ground and power feeds for proper continuity and low resistance
  • Check fuses and fusible links that feed the BCM
  • Check for communication on CAN/LIN (scan tool should show module present and live data)

Signal parameters

  • Battery supply voltage to BCM: ~12.0–14.5 V (key off/key on)
  • IGN/ACC feed presence when key on: battery voltage present at ignition feed pin
  • BCM ground resistance: ideally
  • CAN bus: differential voltage idle ~2.5 V on CAN_H and CAN_L (approx. 60 Ω across high/low with ignition off depending on vehicle)
  • Module awake/asleep state messages and network heartbeat frequency as shown by scan tool
  • Lamp/relay control outputs: should switch to battery or ground when commanded by the scan tool

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and document all DTCs and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool; note related network errors.
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce; if code returns permanently, proceed.
  3. Verify battery condition and secure battery terminals; measure BCM supply and ground pins for proper voltage and continuity.
  4. Visually inspect BCM and connector for corrosion, water ingress, burned pins or damage; repair wiring/connector issues as required.
  5. Check all fuses and fusible links feeding the BCM; replace if blown and investigate cause.
  6. With scan tool, confirm BCM is communicating on the vehicle network and monitor key inputs/outputs while exercising affected functions.
  7. Perform wiggle/insulation tests on harness while monitoring for fault reappearance to locate intermittent wiring faults.
  8. If wiring and power/ground are good but internal faults persist, check for available software updates or reflash procedures per OEM; perform programming only with proper tools and security procedures.
  9. If software update/reflash does not clear the fault or module fails self-tests, replacement of the BCM may be required. Follow OEM programming, pairing, and immobilizer/key reprogramming steps after replacement.
  10. After repair, clear codes and verify proper operation and that code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Battery discharged, weak or intermittent battery connection to BCM
  • Loose, bent or corroded BCM connector pins
  • BCM exposed to moisture or previous fluid spill
  • Blown internal fuse or regulator inside module
  • Software corruption after failed update or during battery disconnect
  • CAN bus short or termination fault causing abnormal messages
