Causes

  • Open or short in the input data/communication wiring (to ground or battery)

  • Communication faults reported on a diagnostic tool (lost messages)
  • Warning or malfunction indicator lights in the dash
  • Erratic sensor readings or frozen values in live data
  • No obvious mechanical fault with the related component

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending codes from all modules; note freeze frame and related U-codes
  • Use a scan tool to monitor live data from the suspected sensor/module and communication status
  • Visually inspect connectors, pins and wiring for corrosion, damage and proper seating
  • Wiggle harnesses/connectors while monitoring the live data to reproduce the fault
  • Check supply voltage and ground at the module and sensor (battery voltage present and stable)
  • Measure bus termination resistance for CAN (approx. 60 Ω between CAN H and CAN L with ignition off)

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus typical idle (recessive): CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V; dominant state: CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V
  • Total CAN bus termination: ~60 Ω between CAN_H and CAN_L (two 120 Ω terminators in parallel)
  • LIN bus idle (recessive): near battery voltage through pull-up; dominant low ≈ 0 V
  • Signal integrity: expect clean square/differential waveform on scope; excessive noise, missing edges or clipped levels indicate problem
  • Supply and ground at module: stable battery voltage (within ~0.5 V) with ignition on and no excessive voltage drop

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record full DTC list and freeze frame; do not erase codes yet.
  2. Attempt to reproduce the fault while monitoring live data for the affected input and communication status.
  3. Visually inspect connectors, pins and wiring for damage, corrosion or loose terminals; repair as needed.
  4. Verify power and ground circuits to the module and sensor(s). Repair poor power/ground before further testing.
  5. Check bus termination resistance and continuity of data lines to other nodes; repair shorted or open conductors.
  6. Backprobe the data line and observe voltages with a DMM; if intermittent or out-of-range, use an oscilloscope to inspect waveform for noise or missing frames.
  7. Disconnect suspect sensor or node and see if the fault clears or other modules report loss of communication to isolate the faulty node.
  8. If wiring and connectors check good, update module software to latest calibration and re-test.
  9. If all tests point to the module, consider replacement or repair of the control module per manufacturer procedures.
  10. After repair, clear codes and perform functional test and a road test to confirm the fault does not return.
