Causes

  • Failed door actuator switch (mechanical or electrical failure)
  • Broken, corroded or disconnected wiring or connector to the actuator/switch
  • Water ingress or corrosion inside door harness or connector
  • Blown fuse or poor power/ground to the door module or actuator
  • Faulty door control module (BCM/CCM) or intermittent module software fault
  • CAN / communication errors affecting reporting of switch status

Symptoms

  • Door lock/unlock does not respond for a single door or operates intermittently
  • Clicking or no sound from the actuator when operating locks
  • Central locking works for other doors but not the affected door
  • Door ajar, lock fault or message displayed on instrument cluster
  • Fuse(s) related to door locking may be blown

What to check

  • Read and record DTCs and freeze-frame data with a diagnostic scanner; clear codes and attempt to re-create
  • Visually inspect door wiring, connectors (including hinge flex section) and actuator for damage or corrosion
  • Check related fuses and relays for continuity and correct operation
  • Operate the door lock while listening for actuator movement; note whether actuator attempts to move
  • Verify other doors and keyfob operation to isolate to a single door
  • Inspect for water entry or damaged door seals that could affect the actuator/switch

Signal parameters

  • 12 V supply present at actuator/power pin when lock/unlock commanded (reference vehicle wiring diagram)
  • Good ground continuity between actuator ground and chassis
  • Switch or sensor output changes state (logic voltage or resistance) when lock/unlock is commanded
  • Actuator motor resistance typically low (ohms range) — open or very high resistance indicates motor or winding fault
  • CAN / LIN messages present and valid for door module when scanned (no communication errors)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a compatible diagnostic scanner, read DTCs and check for related codes (including network faults). Note which door is affected.
  2. Confirm symptom: operate locks via switch, keyfob and central locking while observing/recording scanner data and listening for actuator operation.
  3. Perform visual inspection of door harness, connector at door hinge, and actuator for corrosion, water damage, broken wires or loose pins.
  4. Check fuses/relays for the circuit and verify battery voltage at the actuator supply pin with the lock command applied.
  5. Back-probe connector at the actuator/switch: verify supply voltage, ground continuity, and that the switch output toggles when operated. Compare to expected behavior in wiring diagram.
  6. Measure motor resistance and apply battery voltage briefly (bench test if removed) to confirm actuator motor operation. Do not apply voltage too long to avoid damage.
  7. Wiggle-test the harness while operating the switch to detect intermittent wiring faults; inspect for chafed wires in the door flex area.
  8. If wiring and actuator check OK, verify the door control module outputs via diagnostics; check for and address CAN/LIN communication errors.
  9. Replace faulty actuator/switch or repair wiring/connectors as indicated. After repair, clear codes and verify correct operation; perform any required relearn/programming.

Likely causes

  • Faulty door actuator switch or actuator assembly
  • Damaged or corroded connector at door hinge/door module
  • Open/short in power or ground feed to the actuator/switch
  • Water ingress into door harness or switch

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Door actuator switch circuit failure detected — door lock/actuator switch not responding or signal out of range.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
