Causes

What to check

  • Visually inspect seat switch, seat module and connectors for corrosion, water, damage
  • Check fuses and relays that supply seat circuits
  • Check wiring continuity and for short to ground/power at seat switch and module
  • Verify CAN/bus communications to the seat module with a scan tool

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage to seat module: nominal 12 V (engine off) to 14.4 V (engine running)
  • Switch reference/signal: typically 0–5 V or discrete ground-signal type depending on design

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable diagnostic scanner. Record B2143 and any related codes (seat, BCM, CAN). Note freeze frame and occurrence count.
  2. Verify battery voltage stable and above 12 V. Recharge or connect battery maintainer if low.
  3. Visually inspect driver's seat switch, harness and seat control module connectors for corrosion, pulled pins or water damage. Repair as needed.
  4. Check fuses/power to seat module. Probe power and ground pins at the module connector for good supply and chassis ground continuity.
  5. With ignition on, monitor live data for the driver's seat switch inputs while operating the switches. If inputs do not change, suspect switch or wiring.
  6. Back-probe switch connector and measure continuity/resistance while actuating each function. Replace switch if contacts fail.
  7. Check for stored NVM or internal module errors via dealer-level diagnostic functions. Attempt to clear code and operate memory function; retest for recurrence.
  8. If module software update or NVM re-learn procedure is available from factory service information, perform as instructed. Re-run diagnostics after reprogramming.
  9. If wiring, switch and reprogramming are good but fault persists, bench-test or replace the seat control module (observe safety and radio/airbag programming cautions).
  10. After repair, clear codes and verify full seat switch and memory function over multiple ignition cycles; road test if required.
