Interior Lamp Override Switch Short to Ground

Causes

  • Internal short in the interior lamp override switch
  • Chafed or pinched wiring contacting chassis ground
  • Corroded or damaged connector terminals
  • Aftermarket accessory or improper splice tied to ground
  • Body Control Module (BCM) input circuit fault
  • Water intrusion in switch or harness

Symptoms

  • Interior/dome lamps behave incorrectly (may be stuck on or not respond)
  • Battery drain or parasitic battery discharge
  • Lamp-related warning or message on cluster
  • Switch operation has no effect or is intermittent
  • Related fuse may blow or show signs of overheating

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and full DTC list; confirm B2210 is current or history
  • Visually inspect switch, connector, and harness for damage, corrosion, or water
  • Check related fuses for condition and signs of shorting
  • Disconnect the override switch connector and check for continuity to ground from the BCM input pin
  • Backprobe switch connector and measure voltage/logic level with switch operated and released
  • Wiggle harness and operate switch while watching ECU input and lamp behavior

Signal parameters

  • Switch input voltage (with key on): expected ~battery voltage or pull-up level when switch open; ~0 V (ground) when switch closed — verify against vehicle wiring diagram
  • Continuity to ground on the switch input:
  • Resistance of switch between terminals (with connector removed): open/infinite when open, low ohms when closed (manufacturer spec)
  • Parasitic draw: significant current from battery with ignition off can indicate shorted lamp circuit

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record DTC and freeze frame; note whether code is current or historic.
  2. Visually inspect switch, bezel, and harness routing for damage, corrosion, or water entry. Repair obvious issues.
  3. With ignition off, disconnect the interior lamp override switch connector. Measure continuity between the BCM/sensor input terminal and ground. If continuity is present, the short is downstream (wiring/BCM).
  4. If no continuity with connector disconnected, bench-test the switch: measure resistance between switch terminals in both positions to confirm correct operation.
  5. With ignition on, backprobe the switch input at the connector. Observe voltage with switch operated and released; compare to expected values from wiring diagram. If input is stuck near 0 V regardless of switch, trace harness toward BCM for shorts.
  6. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting intermediate connectors and sections of harness to locate the short (use continuity tests and visual inspection at harness pass-throughs, door hinges, and body clips).
  7. If harness repair required, repair/replace damaged wiring, heat-shrink and seal splices, and replace corroded connectors. If switch fails bench test, replace the switch.
  8. If wiring and switch check good, test and, if necessary, replace or reprogram the BCM per manufacturer procedures.
  9. Clear DTCs, perform functional test of lamp override operation and monitor for reappearance of B2210. Re-check battery draw if parasitic drain was suspected.
  10. Safety note: isolate battery when performing wiring repairs and avoid shorting power circuits.

Likely causes

  • Damaged wiring harness where it passes through door hinge or body panel (pinch/chafe)
  • Failed override switch with internal short
  • Corroded connector at switch or BCM causing ground continuity
  • Incorrect or exposed splice from aftermarket device

Fault status

⚠️ Status
