Causes

  • Damaged wiring or chafed insulation contacting chassis ground
  • Corroded or pushed-out connector pins (short to ground at connector)
  • Failed door ajar switch or door latch assembly with internal short
  • Water intrusion in the sliding door harness or connector
  • Improper aftermarket equipment or recent body repairs that disturbed the harness
  • Control module internal fault (rare)

Symptoms

  • Door ajar warning lamp or message for passenger sliding door
  • Interior lights remain on or behave incorrectly when sliding door closed
  • Chime or warning tone indicating open door
  • Automatic sliding door functions may be inhibited or behave erratically
  • Possible increased battery drain if lights stay on

What to check

  • Read and record DTC(s) and freeze frame data with a diagnostic scan tool
  • Check related stored codes for other doors or body module faults
  • Visually inspect sliding door wiring harness, grommets, and connectors for damage, corrosion, or water
  • Operate the sliding door while watching live data for the door ajar input
  • Backprobe the ajar circuit at the door switch and at the module connector to compare voltages
  • Disconnect the door harness at the body connector to see if the fault clears (isolates door side vs body side)

Signal parameters

  • Expected idle state: open/high (depends on vehicle — typically pulled up to battery voltage or module reference when door closed)
  • Fault state: circuit measured near 0 V (direct short to chassis ground or module ground)
  • Switch resistance: closed or open depending on switch type — check service manual for nominal values
  • Live-data behavior: signal should change state when door is opened/closed; a constant low indicates short to ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool, confirm DTC B2246, note freeze frame/live data and clear codes to see if fault returns.
  2. Visually inspect the entire passenger sliding door harness, grommet, hinge area, and connector for damage, corrosion, or water entry.
  3. With ignition ON, monitor the door ajar signal at the body module connector while operating the door. If signal is low at module but changes at the door switch, suspect harness damage between door and module.
  4. Disconnect the door-side connector at the body harness. If the code clears with connector disconnected, inspect the door-side wiring and switch. If the code remains, inspect body-side wiring and module connector.
  5. Backprobe the ajar wire at the door switch. Actuate the switch manually while watching voltage or continuity. Replace the switch/latch if it fails to change state correctly.
  6. If voltage is continuously near 0 V, perform a pin-to-ground continuity test with connector disconnected to locate the short. Isolate sections of the harness by disconnecting intermediate connectors or unplugging components until continuity is removed.
  7. Repair identified wiring damage (repair/replace harness, replace grommets, reterminate pins, apply dielectric grease) or replace the faulty door latch/switch.
  8. After repair, clear codes and confirm correct live-data behavior across multiple open/close cycles. Verify no additional related codes and confirm normal door operation and warning lamp behavior.
  9. If harness and switch check good but fault persists, consider testing/replacing the body/comfort control module per manufacturer procedures.

Likely causes

  • Chafed harness where wire rubs on body panels near sliding door tracks
  • Corroded/contaminated connector at sliding door or body harness (pin shorted to shell)
  • Failed door ajar switch inside the sliding door latch
  • Wire damaged by door movement (pinched in hinge or track)
