Airbag Control Module Internal Fault

Type: B — Body

Causes

  • Internal electronic component failure inside the airbag control module (MCU, memory, power regulator)
  • Corrupted or failed firmware/software in the SRS module
  • Intermittent or low battery supply (voltage out of range) to the module
  • Poor power/ground connections or wiring harness damage to the module
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to the module
  • CAN/bus communication faults preventing successful module self-test

Symptoms

  • SRS/Airbag warning lamp illuminated or flashing on dash
  • Stored SRS codes and inability to clear this code persistently
  • Possible loss of communication with SRS module via scan tool or intermittent communication
  • Seat belt pretensioner or airbag disabled indications in scanner data
  • Vehicle may fail safety inspection due to active SRS fault

What to check

  • Use a capable diagnostic scanner to read all SRS codes and freeze-frame data; note related codes and occurrence counts
  • Check battery voltage and charging system under load; ensure stable 12–14.5 V during cranking and operation
  • Visually inspect SRS module connectors and harness for corrosion, water damage, bent pins, or broken wires
  • Check module ground(s) for tightness and low resistance to chassis (use DMM)
  • Verify CAN/LIN wiring continuity and bus integrity if the module communicates on network(s)
  • Attempt to communicate with module repeatedly to see if fault is intermittent

Signal parameters

  • Module supply voltage (Vbat): expected ~11–16 V; drops below ~9–10 V can cause faults
  • Ground resistance to chassis:
  • CAN bus voltages: dominant ~0.9 V, recessive ~2.5–2.75 V (verify per vehicle)
  • Module sleep/wake current: near 0 mA in sleep (consult vehicle spec); increased current may indicate internal short
  • Comm. message rate: SRS messages typically at regular intervals—absence indicates comms fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Obtain full SRS and network scan with freeze-frame and clear history; record all related codes
  2. Verify battery state of charge and charging system; recharge battery and retest (stable supply before further testing)
  3. Visually inspect the SRS module and harness for water ingress, corrosion, impact damage, or rodent chew marks; repair wiring/connector damage as found
  4. With ignition off and battery isolated per manufacturer safety procedure, disconnect and reseat module connectors; inspect pins for damage/corrosion
  5. Restore power; re-scan for codes. If code persists, check power and ground at the module connector with DMM while key on (compare to signal_params)
  6. Check CAN/LIN communication at the module connector with scope or CAN tester; verify bus voltages and that the module is seen on the network
  7. If power, ground and communications are confirmed good and no wiring faults found, attempt manufacturer-approved software reflash or recalibration (follow OEM procedure)
  8. If reflash fails or internal hardware fault remains after verifying external circuits and communications, replace the airbag control module with a programmed and configured unit per OEM requirements
  9. After repair or replacement, clear codes, perform required SRS system tests/resets and verify SRS lamp extinguishes and no related codes return. Document steps and final findings

Likely causes

  • Faulty module electronics (most likely when power/ground and wiring check OK)
  • Software/firmware corruption (after crash, failed update, or battery disconnect during reflash)
  • Loss of module supply or ground due to connector corrosion or harness damage
  • CAN-bus communication error masquerading as internal module error

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Airbag Control Module Internal Fault — SRS module self-test failed. Airbag system may be disabled. Inspect module power, grounds, harness and communication; follow OEM procedures for reprogramming or replacement.
