Causes

  • Damaged or disconnected curtain airbag connector or wiring (open, short to ground, short to battery)
  • Corroded or pushed-out connector in headliner, A-pillar or door area
  • Faulty curtain airbag module (squib)
  • Faulty Restraints Control Module (RCM) or airbag diagnostic unit
  • Poor battery voltage or intermittent power/ground to SRS module
  • CAN/data-bus communication fault between airbag module and RCM

Symptoms

  • SRS/airbag warning light illuminated on instrument panel
  • Associated SRS fault(s) stored in diagnostic memory
  • Possible deactivation of curtain airbag deployment function
  • Vehicle may show multiple related restraint system codes
  • No other drivability symptoms in many cases

What to check

  • Read and record all SRS codes and freeze-frame data with a capable diagnostic tool
  • Verify battery voltage is within specification (stable ~12.6 V) and battery terminals are clean/tight
  • Perform visual inspection of curtain airbag wiring, connectors in headliner, A-pillar and door areas
  • Check for signs of water ingress, corrosion, aftermarket modifications or previous body repairs
  • Confirm RCM and airbag module connectors are fully seated and locked
  • Check for lost or abnormal CAN bus messages between RCM and restraint components

Signal parameters

  • SRS module status flags/diagnostic trouble code detail (via OEM diagnostic tool)
  • Curtain airbag squib circuit resistance (compare to spec in service manual)
  • Presence and frequency of CAN messages for restraint system and curtain module
  • Supply voltage to airbag module (key on and cranking) and ground integrity
  • Continuity and short-to-ground/short-to-battery checks on airbag harness circuits

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable OEM or equivalent SRS diagnostic tool. Record all stored codes, freeze frame and module status.
  2. Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system; ensure stable supply during testing.
  3. Inspect harness, connectors and routing for the curtain airbag (headliner / A-pillar / roof rail). Repair any damaged insulation or corroded terminals.
  4. With battery disconnected per manufacturer procedures, measure squib circuit resistance and continuity to the RCM; compare to factory values. Do NOT attempt to fire/activate airbags.
  5. Check for intermittent faults: perform wiggle tests on wiring/connectors while monitoring live data/logs for changes.
  6. Verify integrity of chassis grounds and power feeds to the RCM and curtain module.
  7. Use the diagnostic tool to check for CAN/data-bus faults and module communication errors; address bus issues if present.
  8. If wiring and connectors are good but fault persists, consider module-level faults: reflash or replace the curtain airbag module or RCM per OEM procedures. Follow all SRS safety precautions when handling or replacing modules.
  9. After repair, clear codes, perform SRS self-tests and confirm the code does not return. If available, perform a full system test and road test per manufacturer recommendations.
  10. If crash data / deployment flags are present, follow OEM process for module replacement and system reset; do not attempt repairs that conflict with post-deployment requirements.

Likely causes

  • Wiring/connectors to curtain airbag (most common)
  • Curtain airbag squib/module fault
  • RCM or control module communication failure
  • Intermittent battery/power or ground issue
