Hand Set Failure

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Blown fuse or lost power feed to handset
  • Poor ground or high resistance in ground circuit
  • Damaged handset (microphone/speaker/button assembly)
  • Corroded or loose connector(s) at handset or harness
  • Open or short in handset wiring harness
  • Faulty body control / infotainment module or handset interface module

Symptoms

  • Hands-free handset does not power on or respond
  • No audio (incoming or outgoing) through handset
  • Buttons on handset are unresponsive or behave intermittently
  • Error message or icon on cluster/infotainment referencing handset or phone failure
  • Bluetooth/hands-free functions unavailable or limited
  • Multiple related DTCs present (communication or phone subsystem errors)

What to check

  • Retrieve all stored DTCs with a capable scan tool; record freeze frame and current data
  • Visually inspect handset, connectors, and harness for corrosion, damage, or water intrusion
  • Verify relevant fuses and fusible links for continuity
  • Check for proper battery voltage at the handset power pin(s) with ignition ON (see signal_params)
  • Check ground continuity from handset ground to chassis (low resistance)
  • Wiggle harness and connectors while observing live data to reproduce an intermittent fault

Signal parameters

  • Battery supply (key ON): ~11–14 V present at handset power pin
  • Ground: continuity to chassis, resistance ideally
  • CAN bus idle voltage: each CAN_H/CAN_L ~2.5 V (differential ~0 V idle) — modules should see normal CAN traffic
  • Data/serial communication: data frames for hands-free subsystem present on scan tool (packets and expected IDs)
  • Speaker/mic element checks: speaker continuity varies by design (check manufacturer spec); microphone bias if applicable present

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify symptom and scan for DTC B2310 and any related codes; record all module IDs and descriptions.
  2. Inspect handset, mounting, and visible harness for damage, corrosion, or water entry; repair or clean connectors as needed.
  3. Check fuses and power feed: verify battery voltage at handset power pin with ignition ON; if absent, trace back to fuse and harness.
  4. Verify ground: measure resistance from handset ground pin to chassis ground; repair high-resistance ground.
  5. With scan tool, monitor data-bus traffic and verify the handset/phone module is present on CAN/LIN and exchanging messages; note communication errors.
  6. Perform wiggle test on handset harness and connector while watching live data and listening for symptom changes to locate intermittent wiring faults.
  7. If power/ground and wiring are good but communication fails, attempt a software reset/reflash of the infotainment or handset interface module per manufacturer service information.
  8. If software update/reset doesn’t restore function, bench-test or replace the handset assembly with a known-good unit and verify operation.
  9. If replacement solves the issue, reassemble and clear codes. If not, continue diagnosing upstream modules, harness, or body control module.
  10. After repair, clear codes and perform functional verification under all expected operating conditions; monitor for recurrence.

Likely causes

  • No battery power to handset due to fuse or wiring fault
  • Connector corrosion or pin damage causing intermittent or no connection
  • Handset internal failure (speaker, mic, or circuit board)
  • Loss of CAN/LIN communication between handset and control module
  • Module software lockup requiring reprogramming or reset

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Manufacturer-specific body code indicating the vehicle detected a malfunction in the handset (hands-free/telephone) circuit or module. May be caused by power/ground loss, communication failure, or internal handset fault. Further diagnostic steps required to isolate root cause.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.8-2.5 hours
