Causes

  • Internal BCM hardware failure
  • Corrupted or failed BCM software/firmware
  • Intermittent or low supply voltage to BCM (battery/alternator issues)
  • Poor or corroded ground or power connections to BCM
  • Water ingress or connector corrosion at BCM
  • CAN/LIN bus short, open, or high resistance causing communication errors

Symptoms

  • BCM-warning lamp or MIL illuminated
  • Intermittent or complete loss of vehicle body functions (lighting, locks, wipers, windows, HVAC controls)
  • Multiple communication-related trouble codes present (other modules reporting lost communication)
  • Keyless entry, start/stop, or immobilizer issues
  • Erratic behavior of comfort/convenience features
  • Possible battery drain if BCM is stuck awake

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs and freeze frame with a capable diagnostic tool; note other modules reporting communication loss
  • Check battery resting voltage and charging system health
  • Verify BCM fuses and related relays (inspect and test)
  • Visually inspect BCM connectors and harness for corrosion, water damage, bent pins, or loose terminals
  • Check and measure BCM power and ground circuits for proper voltage and low resistance
  • Scan CAN/LIN network status on the diagnostic tool and check for bus errors or other node faults

Signal parameters

  • BCM supply voltage (key off/on) — nominal battery range ~12–14V; should be stable and within manufacturer spec
  • Battery voltage at BCM connector and chassis ground resistance (low ohms)
  • CAN bus voltages (CAN H / CAN L idle voltages ~2.5V each; verify expected recessive/dominant swings per service data)
  • CAN bus error/frame counts and node heartbeat messages as reported by diagnostic tool
  • LIN bus voltage levels where applicable
  • Module current draw (compare to spec if parasitic draw suspected)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a full-function diagnostic tool and read all codes (record codes from BCM and other modules).
  2. Verify battery state of charge and charging system; recharge or replace battery if voltage is low and re-check codes.
  3. Inspect BCM area for signs of water ingress, physical damage, or corrosion; disconnect battery before inspecting connectors.
  4. Check BCM fuses/relays and verify power and ground circuits at the BCM pin(s) for proper voltage and low resistance to chassis ground.
  5. Use the diagnostic tool to check CAN/LIN network health; look for lost messages, high error counts, or bus-off conditions. Probe CANH/CANL signals with a scope or meter per service procedures.
  6. Wiggle test wiring harness and connectors while monitoring communication and power to see if a fault is intermittent.
  7. If wiring, power, and grounds are good and communications still show BCM internal fault, check for available software updates or reflash/reprogram BCM using manufacturer tool.
  8. If reflash fails to clear the fault and diagnostics point to internal module fault, follow manufacturer procedure for BCM replacement and programming. Do not replace module without confirming external causes first.
  9. After repair or reflash, clear codes, perform relearns/programming as required, and verify full system operation and absence of returned codes on road test or functional checks.

Likely causes

  • BCM hardware fault
  • Low/unstable battery or poor charging causing module reset or corruption
  • Corroded connector or ground at BCM
  • CAN bus wiring fault affecting BCM communications
  • Software/firmware corruption requiring reflash

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Internal fault reported in Body Control Module (BCM). Module has detected an internal error or communication/power abnormality requiring electrical and network diagnostics.
