Humidity sensor failure

Causes
- Failed humidity sensor (internal fault)
- Open or short circuit in sensor wiring
- Corroded or loose connector or pins
- Water ingress or contamination at sensor or connector
- Intermittent connection due to chafing or damaged harness
- Incorrect replacement sensor or poor calibration/software issue
Symptoms
- HVAC automatic climate control not controlling defog/airflow correctly
- Incorrect or no cabin humidity reading on climate display (if equipped)
- Persistent fault lamp or stored B2413 trouble code
- Increased window fogging or improper demist behavior
- Unexpected HVAC mode changes or inoperative humidity-dependent features
What to check
- Read stored/frozen fault data with a JLR-capable scan tool; note freeze frame and live data
- Verify software/firmware is up to date for HVAC/BCM modules before replacing parts
- Visually inspect humidity sensor location, mounting and connector for corrosion, water or damage
- Check harness routing for chafing, pinching or recent work in the area
- Backprobe connector and measure reference voltage, signal and ground at the sensor
- Check continuity and resistance of wiring between sensor and control module
Signal parameters
- Reference supply: typically 5 V (verify specification for exact model/year)
- Signal output: typically an analog voltage proportional to relative humidity (approx. 0.5–4.5 V for 0–100% RH) or a digital CAN/LIN message
- Sensor ground: low-resistance ground (
- Typical update rate: 1 Hz or as specified by OEM; check live data for update cadence
- Expected sensor resistance/capacitance varies by design — consult OEM data for exact values
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a diagnostic scan tool capable of reading Land Rover HVAC/BCM data. Read DTCs and note freeze frame and live values for humidity sensor.
- Inspect sensor and connector for corrosion, water intrusion, bent pins or contamination. Repair or dry connector if moisture is present, then clear codes and re-test.
- With ignition ON, backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage (≈5 V), ground continuity and sensor output. If reference or ground missing, trace wiring to module.
- If output is open (no voltage) or shorted to battery/ground, disconnect sensor and measure continuity to module; repair wiring as needed (replace damaged section or terminals).
- Wiggle harness/connectors while monitoring live output to identify intermittent opens/shorts. Repair chafed wiring or secure harness.
- If wiring and connectors are good but the output signal is out of expected range or not changing with ambient humidity, replace the humidity sensor with OEM part and re-test.
- After repair or replacement, clear DTCs and verify proper operation over a suitable test period (including cycling HVAC and driving where needed).
- If fault remains after sensor replacement and wiring verified, investigate HVAC control module, body control module or communication bus (check related U-codes) and consider module diagnostics or reflashing per OEM procedure.
Likely causes
- Moisture/water in the sensor connector causing intermittent short or open
- Broken or disconnected sensor wiring (pinched at door/roof area)
- Sensor element failure due to age or contamination
- Connector pins pushed out/corroded or poor terminal contact
- Module reporting error after a recent repair or sensor replacement
Fault status
Status
B2413 — Humidity sensor failure: sensor open/short or implausible signal detected by control module.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
