Causes

  • Weak or discharged key fob coin cell battery
  • Corroded or loose battery contacts inside the fob
  • Incorrect or poorly seated replacement battery
  • Damaged transmitter PCB or antenna (water, impact, wear)
  • Receiver/antenna fault in the vehicle or poor RF reception
  • External radio-frequency interference

Symptoms

  • Reduced remote range (must be very close to vehicle for function)
  • Intermittent lock/unlock or panic button operation
  • Remote start, keyless entry, or fob-initiated functions fail sporadically
  • Dash or infotainment message indicating low key battery (on some vehicles)
  • Spare or other fob works normally while affected fob does not

What to check

  • Verify owner reports and reproduce symptom with the indicated fob
  • Inspect fob for physical damage, corrosion, or moisture ingress
  • Measure fob coin cell voltage with a multimeter (in-circuit or removed)
  • Try a known-good spare fob to compare behavior
  • Replace battery with correct type and retest operation and range
  • Scan vehicle for related DTCs and verify receiver module status

Signal parameters

  • Typical coin cell nominal voltage: ~3.0 V (CR2032/CR2025 family); low threshold often ~2.4 V or manufacturer specified
  • Expected transmit frequency depends on region: commonly 315 MHz, 433 MHz, or 868 MHz
  • Normal remote operating range: several meters to tens of meters (varies by vehicle); drastic reduction indicates problem
  • Receiver sensitivity and transmit power are manufacturer-specific; low battery reduces effective RF power
  • Intermittent transmission or malformed packets may be observed if battery voltage is marginal

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm symptom and identify which fob(s) are affected. Attempt operation with each fob and note differences.
  2. Visually inspect the affected fob for damage, corrosion, water ingress, or loose components.
  3. Remove and measure the coin cell battery voltage with a multimeter. Record the value and compare to nominal and low threshold.
  4. If battery is at or below the low threshold, install a fresh, correct-spec replacement (observe polarity and handling).
  5. Retest fob functions at various distances and from different positions around the vehicle. If normal, clear any related codes and advise customer to monitor.
  6. If problem persists after battery replacement, inspect internal battery contacts and solder joints, clean corrosion, and verify battery seating.
  7. Test with a known-good spare fob. If spare works normally, focus on repair or replacement of the affected transmitter.
  8. If no fobs operate properly, scan for receiver/module DTCs, inspect vehicle antenna wiring and connectors, and check module power/ground.
  9. Consider reprogramming/relearning the fob per manufacturer procedure if required after battery replacement; follow safe procedures to avoid security lockout.
  10. If RF interference is suspected, attempt operation in a different location or with interference source removed and document findings.

Likely causes

  • Aged CR2032 (or equivalent) coin cell below recommended voltage
  • Battery contacts contaminated with dirt/corrosion reducing contact voltage
  • User installed wrong polarity or incorrect battery size/type
  • Intermittent transmitter due to cracked solder joint or damaged antenna trace
  • Vehicle receiver sensitivity reduced (antenna connector loose or module fault)
