HYUNDAI B — Body

Right Head Lamp(Low Beam) Short to Ground

Brand: HYUNDAI
Type: B — Body

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Damaged or chafed wiring harness causing the positive feed to contact ground
  • Corroded or bent connector pins at the right headlamp socket
  • Failed or shorted headlamp bulb (filament short or internal short in LED driver)
  • Faulty headlamp assembly (internal short, moisture intrusion)
  • Shorted splice or accessory/aftermarket lamp wiring
  • Defective BCM / lighting control module or a poor ground at module

Symptoms

  • Right low‑beam headlamp does not illuminate
  • Left lamp operates normally (right side only affected)
  • Headlamp fuse may blow repeatedly
  • Dash lamp or BCM may report a lighting fault
  • Possible abnormal current draw from battery when lights on

What to check

  • Visual inspection of right headlamp, connector, and harness for damage, corrosion, or moisture
  • Check headlamp bulb and socket for signs of burning or shorting
  • Verify related fuses and relays are intact
  • Use scan tool to read/reset DTCs and monitor headlamp circuit status
  • Measure voltage at the headlamp socket with connector connected and with lamp switched ON
  • Measure resistance between feed pin and ground with power removed to detect short

Signal parameters

  • Voltage at right low‑beam positive terminal with lamp ON: ~11–14 V (vehicle running)
  • Voltage at positive terminal when shorted to ground: near 0 V or dropped under load
  • Resistance of a good halogen low‑beam bulb: ~1–4 ohms (cold)
  • Resistance between feed and ground with power removed (no short): very high / open
  • Resistance between feed and ground with short to ground: near 0 ohms

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record freeze frame, lamp status, and any related DTCs using a scan tool. Clear DTC and attempt to reproduce.
  2. Visually inspect right headlamp assembly, lens, wiring harness, connector, and chassis grounds for damage, corrosion, or water intrusion. Repair any obvious issues.
  3. With headlamp switch OFF, disconnect right headlamp connector. Check resistance between the feed terminal and chassis ground. If near 0 Ω, there is a short downstream (harness/aftermarket/assembly).
  4. Remove bulb and inspect. Check bulb resistance between terminals. If bulb shows shorted internal connection, replace bulb and retest.
  5. With connector disconnected, apply fused 12 V bench supply briefly to the feed terminal to check for shorts (use a current‑limited source or inline fuse to avoid damage). If fuse blows or supply current is high, isolate by opening harness sections until short clears.
  6. Backprobe with circuit energized: measure voltage at feed terminal with switch ON (expect ~11–14 V). If voltage is low or 0 V and no short at connector, check upstream fuses, relays, and BCM output.
  7. Inspect/repair any damaged wiring, pin repairs, or replace headlamp assembly if internal short or moisture found.
  8. If wiring and lamp assembly are good but the fault persists, test BCM output driver or have BCM tested/replaced per manufacturer procedures.
  9. After repairs, clear DTC and confirm proper operation and no reoccurrence under normal conditions.

Likely causes

  • Harness rubbed through near headlamp or fender
  • Connector pin pushed out or touching ground
  • Bulb failed and created a short between terminals
  • Water ingress inside headlamp causing short
  • Aftermarket wiring tied into lamp circuit creating a direct short

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Right headlamp (low beam) circuit short to ground detected — abnormal low voltage or excessive current on right low‑beam feed. Lamp may be inoperative; DTC stored.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
