Causes

  • Damaged wiring harness (chafing, pinched, cut) causing conductor contact with chassis ground
  • Corroded or pushed-out connector pins making unintended ground connection
  • Failed blower motor resistor or blower control module with internal short to ground
  • Water intrusion into blower motor or connector causing shorting
  • Aftermarket accessory or incorrect previous repair introduced a short to ground
  • Faulty A/C/BCM/control module (less common)

Symptoms

  • Auxiliary A/C blower will not operate at one or more speed settings
  • Blower works only at certain speeds or stuck on/off
  • Related fuse repeatedly blows or is open
  • HVAC performance reduced for auxiliary zone
  • DTC stored and possibly HVAC warning light or message displayed

What to check

  • Retrieve stored codes and freeze frame, note conditions when code set
  • Visual inspection of blower motor, resistor/module, wiring harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, or water intrusion
  • Check related fuses and fusible links for open or signs of overheating
  • With ignition off, inspect connector pins for pushed-out or bridged terminals
  • Measure resistance/continuity between the suspect circuit and chassis ground with harness disconnected (should not be near 0 ohms)
  • Probe the circuit with a DVOM or test lamp while cycling blower speeds to observe presence of voltage or PWM and to see if short appears under load

Signal parameters

  • Expected control voltage range: 0–12 V (0 V = off, ~12 V or PWM duty = high speed)
  • PWM control: duty cycle varies with selected blower speed (frequency varies by manufacturer)
  • Current draw: blower circuits can draw several amps; high currents may cause fuse/fusible link operation (use an appropriate ammeter or clamp meter)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm B2562 stored and note operating conditions (ignition on, A/C enabled, speed selection)
  2. Inspect fuses and fusible links; replace open fuse only after finding/repairing short
  3. Perform a visual inspection of external wiring, connectors at the auxiliary blower, resistor/module and ground points for damage or corrosion
  4. Disconnect auxiliary blower/resistor connector. With ignition off, measure continuity between the blower speed 1 circuit and chassis ground. Near-zero ohms indicates a short to ground; open/very high resistance indicates no short in harness to that point
  5. If short present with connector disconnected, trace back wiring harness and remove panels to visually locate chafe points. Repair/insulate/replace damaged wiring and connectors
  6. If no short with connector disconnected, bench test the blower motor and resistor/module by applying proper voltage via fused jumper or test bench equipment; replace the component if it shows internal short or abnormal current draw
  7. If component tests good, check the A/C/blower control module outputs. Probe output while operating blower: expect 0–12 V or a PWM signal. If output is stuck to ground and wiring is good, suspect control module fault
  8. After repairs, clear codes, reinstall components, verify blower operation at all speeds and confirm code does not return
  9. If intermittent, perform wiggle tests and road test to reproduce conditions; re-inspect any areas that move or flex

Likely causes

  • Chafed wire where harness passes through sheetmetal or near hinge points
  • Corroded/blown connector at the blower motor or resistor pack
  • Failed blower motor/resistor assembly with internal short to ground
