B2581
Rear RH Tail Lamp Circuit Open
Causes
- Burned-out tail lamp bulb or LED module
- Open or broken wiring between the rear RH lamp and the body control module (BCM)
- Corroded, loose or damaged connector at the lamp socket
- Faulty lamp socket or poor ground connection
- Blown fuse or relay (less common for a single lamp)
- Faulty BCM or lamp driver circuit (internal to module)
Symptoms
- Right rear tail lamp does not illuminate with parking/tail lights
- Dash lamp-out message or bulb warning (if equipped)
- Intermittent operation or works when wiring is wiggled
- Possible other lighting anomalies if BCM driver is failing
What to check
- Verify customer concern with engine off and tail lights ON
- Inspect RH tail lamp assembly: lens, bulb or LED module and socket
- Visually inspect wiring harness and connectors for damage, corrosion or poor mating
- Check related fuses and relays in fuse/relay boxes
- Scan BCM for active/frozen DTCs and lamp status (compare LH vs RH outputs)
- Backprobe lamp socket to measure voltage and ground with lights ON
Signal parameters
- Expected battery voltage at lamp power pin with tail lights ON: ~11–14 V
- Expected continuity from lamp ground to chassis:
- Typical filament tail bulb resistance (cold): 1–10 Ω depending on bulb type
- Open-circuit condition: near infinite resistance or 0 V at power pin when commanded
Diagnostic algorithm
- Recreate symptom and confirm code B2581 with scan tool. Note any other related lamp codes.
- Visually inspect RH tail lamp assembly, sockets and mating connectors for corrosion, water intrusion or damage. Replace bulb or LED module if visibly failed.
- Check fuses/relays for the lighting circuit. Replace if blown and retest. If fuse blows again, suspect short to ground.
- With tail lights ON, backprobe the power terminal at RH lamp socket. Expected: ~12 V. If 12 V present and lamp not lit, replace bulb/LED module or socket.
- If no voltage at socket, check continuity between socket power pin and BCM lamp output pin. If open, locate repair section of harness (common break points: trunk hinge, bumper area) and repair.
- Verify ground continuity from lamp ground terminal to chassis; repair any high-resistance grounds.
- If wiring and connectors are good but no output from BCM, test BCM lamp driver output per factory procedure or substitute BCM if confirmed faulty.
- After repair, clear codes and verify repair by cycling lights and rechecking for DTC and lamp operation.
- If intermittent: perform wiggle tests on harnesses while observing socket voltage and scan tool live data to find intermittent opens.
Likely causes
- Burned-out bulb or failed LED module
- Corroded or disconnected connector at RH tail lamp
- Broken wire or chafed harness near trunk hinge or bumper
- Bad ground at tail lamp assembly
