Causes

  • Dead or weak battery in the remote (key fob)
  • Faulty remote (transmitter) or worn buttons
  • Receiver/antenna circuit fault in BCM or separate RKE receiver module

What to check

  • Verify warning lamp/messages related to RKE in instrument cluster
  • Check and replace key fob battery, verify LED on fob blinks when pressed
  • Try spare remote(s) to determine if issue is single transmitter or receiver
  • Scan BCM/BCI module for stored DTCs and live data for remote button events
  • Inspect fuses and power/ground circuits for BCM/RKE receiver
  • Visually inspect antenna, connectors and coax; check for damage or corrosion

Signal parameters

  • Typical carrier frequency: ~315 MHz (North America) or ~433.92 MHz (Europe/Asia) — verify vehicle spec
  • Pulse trains of encoded data (ASK/OOK amplitude shift keying / on-off keying)
  • Expected key press event at receiver: distinct bursts when button pressed (variable duty cycle)
  • Transmitter supply voltage when new battery installed: nominal cell voltage ~3.0V (coin cell)
  • Receiver input should show RF bursts when remote pressed; absence indicates transmitter/antenna/receiver fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify basic conditions: check vehicle battery voltage and BCM fuses/grounds. Repair as needed.
  2. Replace or verify key fob battery. Confirm LED/activity on fob and retry.
  3. Test known-good spare remote. If spare works, suspect primary transmitter; repair/replace transmitter.
  4. Use a scan tool to monitor BCM for remote button press events. Press key and confirm BCM registers events.
  5. If BCM shows no events, perform RF test: with RF detector or oscilloscope at receiver/antenna, observe for RF bursts while pressing remote.
  6. Inspect the receiver antenna, connectors and coax for open/short/corrosion. Repair wiring/connectors as needed.
  7. Verify power and ground to the RKE receiver/BCM. Check for blown fuses, relays, or voltage drops on supply lines.
  8. Attempt remote reprogramming/pairing per service manual. If programming fails, capture error details from scan tool.
  9. If receiver hardware is confirmed dead (no RF detected and good remotes), replace RKE receiver or BCM module per manufacturer procedure and reprogram remotes.
  10. Clear DTCs, confirm proper operation of all remotes, and perform final system check for intermittent faults.

  • BCM/RKE receiver not powered due to fuse or wiring fault
