Page language: EN

Causes

  • Internal BCM hardware failure (CPU, memory, power supply inside module)
  • Corrupted or failed BCM software/firmware
  • Low or unstable battery/vehicle supply to BCM
  • Poor power/ground connections or blown fuse(s)
  • CAN/LIN network issues or loss of communications causing watchdog timeouts
  • Water ingress or physical damage to BCM connector/module

Symptoms

  • MIL/Warning lamps illuminated and DTC stored for BCM
  • One or more body functions inoperative (lights, locks, wipers, windows, interior modules)
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of CAN communication with other modules
  • Vehicle may enter limp or reduced functionality modes for affected systems
  • Parasitic battery drain or failure to wake/sleep correctly

What to check

  • Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze frame data from the BCM and other modules
  • Check battery state-of-charge and charging system voltage (12.0–14.8 V expected with engine running)
  • Visually inspect BCM connector(s) and harness for corrosion, water ingress, damage or loose pins
  • Verify BCM power and ground circuits at the module terminals and relevant fuses/relays
  • Check CAN bus continuity and that other modules are present/responding on the network
  • Attempt to communicate with BCM using a manufacturer-level scan tool to view module status and internal failure codes

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage at BCM supply pin (key off and key on values)
  • Ignition wake and sleep signals to BCM
  • CAN TX/RX activity and error counters (bus errors, message loss)
  • Internal module alive/uptime and self-test/fail status reported by OEM tool
  • Fused power feed presence and ground resistance values
  • Any module-specific diagnostic flags or status bytes available via OEM tool

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture full vehicle code report (all modules) and any freeze frame information. Note intermittent vs permanent codes.
  2. Verify vehicle battery condition and charging system. Recharge or replace battery if voltage is low; retest.
  3. Visually inspect BCM area for water ingress, corrosion or physical damage. Repair or isolate any moisture sources.
  4. Check and measure power and ground at the BCM connector. Verify fuses/relays feeding the BCM. Repair wiring or replace fuses as needed.
  5. Verify CAN bus health: check bus voltages, termination, and ability to see other modules. Repair wiring faults if present.
  6. Using an OEM-level diagnostic tool, attempt to communicate with BCM, read module status, internal error logs and software part numbers.
  7. If communication is possible, attempt to clear the DTC and perform required relearn or self-test procedures. Recheck for recurrence.
  8. If software corruption is suspected or manufacturer bulletin advises, attempt reprogram/flash the BCM with latest calibration following OEM procedures.
  9. If reflash fails, module is non-responsive, or diagnostics report internal hardware faults, replace the BCM with a correct part and perform module coding/vehicle programming and any required pairing (immobilizer/key matching if applicable).
  10. After repair or replacement, perform a full system test for affected body functions and re-scan for codes. Monitor vehicle for recurrence.

Likely causes

  • Corrupted firmware or software fault requiring reflash
  • Internal electronics failure in BCM (memory, processor, power regulator)
  • Vehicle battery low voltage or poor ground causing module errors
  • Connector corrosion or water damage at BCM

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Body Control Module internal fault detected; module failed internal self-test or reports internal electronic/software error.
🔴 Repair difficulty: Hard
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.5-4.0 hours
