Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring in passenger seat belt buckle circuit
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged connector at buckle or module
  • Failed/passenger seat belt buckle switch
  • Water ingress or contamination in buckle assembly
  • Faulty body control/airbag/occupant classification module or poor ground
  • Intermittent wiring damage from seat movement or seat track

Symptoms

  • Seat belt warning light illuminated or flashing
  • Continuous seat belt reminder chime even when buckle is fastened
  • Passenger airbag/occupant detection warnings or faults
  • Incorrect passenger occupancy status on dash or SRS scan tool
  • DTC stored in vehicle diagnostic memory (B2692)

What to check

  • Read DTC with a diagnostic scanner; record freeze frame and related codes
  • Visual inspection of passenger seat buckle, wiring harness under seat, and connectors for damage, corrosion or water
  • Operate buckle while watching live data for buckle switch state change
  • Wiggle harness and buckle while watching live data to find intermittent faults
  • Measure continuity and resistance of buckle switch circuit with harness disconnected
  • Inspect seat track area for chafed wires and replace/secure as required

Signal parameters

  • Buckle switch is a simple open/closed switch; expected state changes when buckle is fastened/unfastened
  • Typical signal: switched to ground or pulled to reference voltage by module (common systems use a 5 V pull-up or a direct ground switch). Verify with manufacturer data
  • Expected continuity: closed (near 0 Ω) when buckle latched, open (OL) when unlatched — confirm with service manual
  • No or very low current draw when idle; intermittent voltage changes indicate wiring/connector issue

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record DTC(s) and freeze-frame with a diagnostic scanner. Note any related airbag/occupant codes.
  2. Visually inspect passenger buckle, harness, and connectors for obvious damage, corrosion or water ingress. Check under trim and seat base.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), monitor buckle switch input using an appropriate scan tool or multimeter. Observe state while buckling/unbuckling.
  4. Perform wiggle test: move the seat through full travel and wiggle harness/connectors while monitoring the signal for intermittent changes.
  5. If no signal change, disconnect buckle connector and measure continuity/resistance across the switch while actuating the buckle. Replace buckle if switch does not change state.
  6. If switch is good, back-probe wiring at the module connector and verify correct reference voltage and continuity to the buckle connector. Repair any opens, shorts or poor grounds.
  7. Repair or replace damaged wiring, connectors, or the buckle assembly. Use dielectric grease on moisture-prone connectors after repair.
  8. Clear codes and retest. Verify that the buckle switch state is reported correctly and no related SRS/occupant faults remain.
  9. If wiring and buckle check OK but fault persists, consult manufacturer wiring diagrams and consider module diagnosis or replacement per service procedures.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or disconnected connector at the buckle (most common)
  • Broken or chafed wire under the seat from track movement
  • Failed buckle switch due to contamination or internal break
  • Corrosion on module connector or poor ground
  • Less likely: control module fault

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Passenger seat belt buckle switch — failure in circuit. Module detects invalid or missing buckle switch signal (B2692).
