Door Lock Actuator Circuit Fault

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Broken or chafed wiring in the door harness
  • Corroded or loose connector at the door lock actuator
  • Failed door lock actuator (motor or internal electronics)
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay for door locks
  • Poor ground connection or high-resistance ground
  • Water intrusion or contamination in connector or actuator

Symptoms

  • Door(s) not locking or unlocking with keyfob or interior switch
  • Intermittent lock operation (works sometimes)
  • Audible clicking or no sound from actuator when commanded
  • Door must be manually locked/unlocked
  • Battery drain in some cases if actuator is stuck drawing current
  • Related warning messages or interior indicator not changing state

What to check

  • Use a scan tool to read B2712 and any other stored codes and check for freeze-frame/live data
  • Operate lock/unlock while watching actuator and listening for noise
  • Visually inspect the door wiring harness, grommet/boot at hinge, actuator connector and pins for corrosion, damage or moisture
  • Check relevant fuses and relays for continuity and correct operation
  • Perform a wiggle test of harness while actuating to reproduce intermittent faults
  • Measure voltage at actuator connector while commanding lock/unlock

Signal parameters

  • Command voltage at actuator when commanded: ~battery voltage (approx. 11–14 V) on the supply side
  • Ground side: near 0 V when switched to ground; verify low-resistance path to chassis ground
  • Expected actuator coil/motor resistance: typically low ohms (commonly 2–30 Ω depending on design) — refer to vehicle-specific spec
  • Actuator current draw when operating: typically under several amps; a stalled or locked actuator may draw higher current
  • Control signal (on vehicles with module control): pulse or switched supply; frequency and waveform are vehicle-specific — consult service data

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm code and note any accompanying codes with a scan tool. Check freeze-frame data and attempt to reproduce fault.
  2. Verify fuse(s) and relay(s) for the door lock circuit; replace any blown fuses and re-test.
  3. With door closed, visually inspect connector, pins, and wiring at the actuator and the flexible boot at the hinge for damage or corrosion.
  4. Command lock/unlock while probing the actuator connector: measure supply voltage and switched ground. Note if voltage is present and whether it changes when commanded.
  5. If voltage is present but actuator does not move, disconnect connector and measure motor resistance. Compare to spec; if open or very high resistance, replace actuator.
  6. Bench-test actuator by applying 12 V and ground briefly to verify operation (observe polarity and use safe test technique).
  7. If no supply voltage at connector when commanded, trace wiring back to the door module/BCM: check continuity to module pins and inspect for shorts to ground or battery.
  8. Check ground integrity for the door/BCM. Repair any high-resistance ground connections.
  9. If wiring and actuator test good, test/inspect the body control/door module (software updates, connector pins, and CAN communication). Replace module only after eliminating wiring and actuator faults.
  10. Repair or replace failed components, clear codes, and verify proper operation over multiple cycles; road test and re-scan to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at actuator
  • Failed actuator motor
  • Open or short in the door harness at the hinge/boot
  • Blown fuse or failed relay
  • Poor ground at door/module
