USB Line Break

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open or broken USB data (D+ / D-) or VBUS (+5V) wire
  • Corroded, bent or damaged USB connector or port
  • Connector not fully seated or improperly mated
  • Blown fuse supplying USB VBUS
  • Water ingress or contamination at USB port
  • Faulty infotainment/head unit or USB interface module

Symptoms

  • USB device not detected by infotainment system
  • No charging of USB device from vehicle USB port
  • Intermittent USB connection or dropouts
  • Media playback from USB stops or isn't available
  • Error or warning message about USB connection on display

What to check

  • Verify related fuses (USB/VBAT/ACC) and replace if blown
  • Try a known-good USB cable and known-good USB device
  • Inspect USB port for debris, corrosion, or mechanical damage
  • Check for other related DTCs (body/infotainment or network codes)
  • Listen for intermittent behavior while wiggling cable/connector
  • Check software/firmware bulletin for infotainment USB issues

Signal parameters

  • VBUS (USB +5V): ≈5.0 V (nominal) when port powered
  • D+ and D- idle voltages: ~2.0–3.3 V depending on pull-up/pull-down
  • Short to ground on VBUS: near 0 V
  • Open circuit: no continuity between port pin and module harness
  • Connector pin voltage should be stable (no large fluctuations) during connection

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze-frame and full DTC list. Note any network communication codes.
  2. Reproduce the symptom with a known-good cable and device to confirm persistence.
  3. Visually inspect the USB port(s) and harness connectors for damage, corrosion or foreign objects. Remove debris if present.
  4. Check and verify relevant fuses for USB power. Replace if blown and retest.
  5. Backprobe or disconnect the USB harness at the module and measure VBUS, D+ and D- with connector mated and unmated. Compare to expected signal parameters.
  6. Perform continuity checks from the USB port pins to the module harness pins; check for opens or high resistance and repair wiring as needed.
  7. Inspect for shorts to ground or battery on VBUS and data lines; isolate and repair any short circuits.
  8. If wiring and port are good, try swapping or testing with a known-good infotainment/USB module if available (or test bench the module) before replacing.
  9. After repair, clear DTCs and verify proper operation and that code does not return during road test/use.
  10. If intermittent, secure routing and connector retention; consider replacing the USB port assembly if mechanical wear is found.

Likely causes

  • Open/poor continuity of a USB data line (D+ or D-)
  • VBUS (5V) power feed open or fuse blown
  • Damaged USB port (mechanical/electrical)
  • Loose or corroded connector at harness or module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
