Causes

What to check

  • Read and record all stored codes and freeze frame data with a compatible scan tool
  • Check battery voltage (key on) — must be stable 11–14 V
  • Visually inspect BT module, head unit, antenna and related connectors for corrosion, water damage, or loose pins
  • Check fuses and relays related to audio/head unit and accessory power
  • Verify grounds for radio/BT module are clean and tight
  • Check vehicle network health: scan for U-codes (lost communication, bus off)

Signal parameters

  • Battery / accessory supply (key ON): ~11–14 V
  • Module internal supply rails (if accessible): typical 5.0 V or 3.3 V (manufacturer spec)
  • CAN bus idle voltage: CAN_H and CAN_L ~2.5 V (differential ~0 V idle), dominant ~1.5 V differential—check with oscilloscope
  • LIN bus idle: ~12 V (pulled up), active pulses to ground—check per vehicle spec
  • Microphone and speaker circuit continuity and resistance per audio wiring diagram

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool, record all codes and network status. Check for related U-codes indicating bus problems.
  2. Verify battery and accessory voltage at fuse/connector with key ON; inspect/replace any blown fuses for radio/BT power.
  3. Visually inspect connectors and wiring to the BT module and head unit. Unplug and inspect pins for corrosion, bent pins or debris; reseat connectors.
  4. Check ground points for the head unit/BT module — clean and torque to spec.
  5. Backprobe power and communication lines at the BT module: confirm power rails (11–14 V where expected, 5 V/3.3 V internal rails if specified) and check CAN/LIN idle voltages and signal integrity with a scope or proper CAN tester.
  6. If CAN/LIN signs are abnormal, isolate by disconnecting the BT module and re-check bus status; repair short/open wiring as found.
  7. If wiring and power are good but module does not respond, try module reset/restart and re-attempt pairing. Check for and apply any OEM software updates or reflash the module per service manual.
  8. If unit remains non-communicative after software steps and wiring/power verified, replace the BT module and clear codes. Re-test pairing and system operation.
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform final scan to confirm no related network errors remain.

  • Connector pins corroded or pushed out at BT module or head unit
  • Accessory power (IGN/ACC) fused open or relay not supplying module
  • Ground(s) for the audio/head unit or BT module high resistance
  • CAN or LIN wiring shorted, open, or high resistance causing no comms

  • Antenna disconnected (may affect pairing but not always comms)
