HYUNDAI B — Body

USB Communication Error

Brand: HYUNDAI
Type: B — Body
Views: UK: 25 EN: 29 RU: 30
AI status
Completed
ready
Completed 100%
Page language: EN

Causes

  • Damaged or contaminated USB port or connector
  • Faulty or incompatible USB cable or device
  • Blown fuse or lost 5V USB supply (VBUS)
  • Short or open in USB data lines (D+ / D-)
  • Intermittent or failed infotainment/head unit or gateway module
  • Software/firmware bug or corrupted module configuration

Symptoms

  • USB device not detected or not enumerating
  • No charging from the USB port or intermittent charging
  • Media playback fails or disconnects from USB source
  • Infotainment displays USB error or ‘USB disconnected’ message
  • Possible stored related DTCs and intermittent operation

What to check

  • Read freeze frame data and stored events with a scan tool
  • Visual inspection of USB port for damage, debris or corrosion
  • Check related fuses and fusible links for continuity
  • Try known-good USB cable and known-good USB device
  • Measure VBUS (≈5 V) at the USB connector with device connected and disconnected
  • Check D+ / D- continuity to head unit and for short to ground or battery

Signal parameters

  • VBUS voltage (approx. +5 V) at USB port
  • D+ / D- differential data activity (USB enumeration signals)
  • USB current draw (mA) when device is connected
  • Power/ground continuity to head unit harness
  • CAN / LIN messages between head unit and gateway (for related comm status)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a scan tool to read B2841 status, freeze frame, and any companion codes. Note whether code is current or historic.
  2. Visually inspect USB port and cable for damage, debris, liquid corrosion. Clean or replace as required.
  3. With key on, check the USB port VBUS for ≈5 V. If missing, check USB-related fuses and power feed circuits for continuity and proper voltage.
  4. Connect a known-good, low-current USB device and cable. Observe if device enumerates and if code returns. If it works, suspect original cable/device.
  5. Measure D+ and D- for activity with an oscilloscope or logic probe during connection/attempted enumeration. Check for shorts to ground or battery.
  6. Inspect and test wiring harness and connector backshell for continuity and shorts to chassis. Wiggle test connectors while monitoring signals to find intermittent faults.
  7. If power and wiring check OK but comms still fail, perform an infotainment system reset (soft reset) and re-scan. Check for firmware updates; perform update if available.
  8. If problem persists and port wiring and module grounds are good, consider replacing the USB port assembly or the infotainment/head unit module. Re-test after repair.
  9. Clear DTCs and perform a road/test reproduction to confirm repair.

Likely causes

  • Debris/corrosion in the USB port causing poor contact
  • USB device drawing excessive current or shorting VBUS
  • Loose wiring or poor ground to the head unit
  • Failed USB port on the head unit (internal damage)
  • Module software needing reset or update

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored when the USB interface fails to properly communicate or enumerate a connected device; fault may be caused by power, data-line, connector, or module software/hardware issues.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2 hours
