Causes

What to check

  • Verify battery voltage with ignition off and during cranking (should be ~12.4–12.8 V at rest; >10 V during cranking).
  • Inspect and test fuses and relays for BCM power circuits.
  • Visually inspect BCM connectors and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, water damage and secure locking.
  • Check primary BCM ground(s) for continuity to chassis/negative battery and measure voltage drop under load (
  • Confirm CAN bus presence: scan tool shows module responses and no bus errors. If intermittent, monitor live data while exercising circuits.

Signal parameters

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an appropriate Land Rover diagnostic tool and record all stored and pending codes, freeze frame, and module communication status.
  2. Verify battery condition and terminal connections. Charge or replace weak battery before continuing.
  3. Check all BCM fuses and related relays; replace any blown components and re-test.
  4. Visually inspect BCM and nearby harness for water ingress, corrosion, rodent damage or pin deformation. Repair or replace damaged connectors/wiring.
  5. Measure BCM supply and ground at the module connector. Confirm proper voltages and low resistance ground. Repair wiring/grounds if out of specification.
  6. Check CAN/LIN bus integrity: measure idle voltages and use an oscilloscope or scan-tool bus monitor to look for noise, missing messages or bus errors. Isolate segments if needed.
  7. Disconnect non-factory accessories and retest to rule out aftermarket interference.
  8. If wiring and power/ground are good but fault persists, attempt proper module reset/clearing of codes and perform a key cycle. Re-scan for immediate return of B2879.
  9. Check for software/firmware updates or TSBs. If available, perform reflash/programming per manufacturer procedure.
  10. If fault remains after exhaustive electrical checks and software update, consider BCM replacement and programming. Follow Land Rover module programming and configuration procedures; do not install a new BCM without proper coding.
  11. After repairs or replacement, clear codes and verify full system operation and no reoccurrence after road test and multiple ignition cycles.
