Front Left Door Module Communication Fault

Causes

  • Open or shorted communication bus wiring (CAN or LIN) between the door module and main body controller
  • Poor or intermittent power supply or ground to the front left door module
  • Corroded, loose, or bent connector pins at the door module or harness splice points
  • Faulty front left door module
  • Another module pulling the bus down (short to ground or to battery)
  • Blown fuse or relay for body/domestic bus power

Symptoms

  • Front left door functions inoperative or intermittent (power window, mirror, lock, courtesy light)
  • Driver display or infotainment shows 'No module' or 'Door module not responding'
  • Multiple body system errors related to that door
  • Door ajar or lock status incorrect
  • DTC B28D0 stored and may reappear after clearing

What to check

  • Scan vehicle with a capable tool: read all codes, freeze frame, and verify if module appears on network list
  • Check for other related U-codes (loss of communication) on the same bus
  • Visually inspect door harness at hinge/boot and connectors for damage, corrosion, or water ingress
  • Verify fuses/relays for door module power circuits
  • Measure key-on voltages at the door module power and ground pins
  • Backprobe module connector and check CAN High/Low (or LIN) idle voltages and waveform with oscilloscope if available

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle voltages: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (differential ≈ 0 V at idle); dominant state: CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V
  • LIN bus idle (if used): line high ≈ vehicle battery (pulled high), dominant low when transmitting
  • Bus message frequency: door module typically transmits low-rate status messages (check OEM message list)
  • Expected module presence on network: module should respond to functional addressing and appear in scan tool node list
  • Error frames or bus-off state will show as distorted waveforms or constant dominant state

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm code and repeat scan: record freeze-frame and other stored codes. Clear codes and re-scan to see if B28D0 returns.
  2. Verify module presence: use scan tool to attempt to communicate with front left door module and view live data/messages.
  3. Check power/ground: with ignition ON, measure battery voltage at module Vbat pin and verify good chassis ground continuity to vehicle negative.
  4. Inspect harness: open boot at door hinge and inspect wiring for chafe, broken conductors, water intrusion or connector corrosion. Repair any damage.
  5. Check fuses/relays: verify and replace any blown fuses or faulty relays for body/door circuits.
  6. Verify bus health: backprobe CAN High/Low (or LIN) at module connector. Look for correct idle voltages and valid waveform. Use oscilloscope for noise or stuck-dominant conditions.
  7. Isolate module: disconnect the door module and check bus condition; if bus returns to normal, the module may be pulling the bus down. If bus remains faulted, inspect wiring between module and gateway/BCM.
  8. Continuity/short tests: with battery disconnected, check continuity between module pins and the gateway/BCM connectors; check for shorts to battery or ground.
  9. Repair wiring or connectors as needed (replace damaged sections, clean/repair pins). After repairs, reconnect and clear codes.
  10. If wiring and power/ground check good but fault persists, evaluate replacing or reflashing the front left door module per OEM procedures. Reprogram module if required after replacement.
  11. Safety note: when disconnecting or replacing modules, follow vehicle-specific immobilizer and reprogramming procedures to avoid additional faults.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or chafed wiring in the door harness (common at hinge area)
  • Corroded connector inside door or at body-side junction
  • Intermittent ground at door module chassis connector
  • Failed door module after water intrusion
  • CAN bus short due to aftermarket equipment or repair error
