Body Control Module Internal Fault
AI status
Completed
Completed
100%
Causes
- BCM internal hardware or software failure
- Low or unstable battery/supply voltage to the BCM
- Poor ground or corroded connector pins at BCM
- CAN/LIN bus communication errors or open/shorted wiring
- Water intrusion or physical damage to BCM
- Blown fuse or faulty relay powering BCM circuits
Symptoms
- BCM-related functions intermittent or inoperative (central locking, lights, wipers, interior lighting, keyless entry)
- Instrument cluster or dash warning lamp(s) illuminated (BCM/ABS/airbag/communication warnings)
- Loss of communication with other modules on scan tool
- Unusual accessory behavior or random faults that clear after restart
- Vehicle may fail immobilizer or not recognize key (in some models)
What to check
- Read freeze frame and full module freeze/extended data with a factory-level or full-function scanner
- Check battery state-of-charge and charging system (restored battery to >12.4 V before tests)
- Inspect BCM connectors and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress, and secure fit
- Check fuses and relays related to BCM power/ignition circuits
- Scan other controllers for related communication (U-codes) or concurrent faults
- Perform a visual inspection of the BCM mounting area for moisture or physical damage
Signal parameters
- Battery/ignition supply voltage to BCM: typically 11–14.5 V during operation
- Ground integrity: low resistance to chassis (
- CAN High/Low idle voltages: approx. CAN_H ~2.5–3.5 V, CAN_L ~1.5–2.5 V (differential ~2 V)
- CAN bus termination: ~60 ohm between CAN_H and CAN_L at key-off/standby (check across network ends)
- LIN bus idle voltage (if used): near battery voltage through pull-up (model dependent)
- BCM internal self-diagnostic status codes or module voltage/current draw (compare to spec)
Diagnostic algorithm
- Retrieve all freeze frame data and full trouble code list from BCM and other modules. Record occurrence conditions and any U-codes.
- Check and restore battery charge to service level. Re-scan for the code with stable battery voltage.
- Visually inspect BCM connectors and harness for corrosion, water, damage, pin/backout. Wiggle-test connections with ignition on and observe for changes.
- Verify fuses/relays supplying BCM and measure supply voltage at the BCM power pins with ignition positions (B+, IG). Check ground(s) resistance to chassis.
- Scan CAN/LIN bus: check for other modules losing communication, measure CAN_H/CAN_L idle voltages and bus differential, and check termination resistance. Repair any wiring faults.
- If wiring/power/communication are confirmed good, attempt to clear the code and reproduce. If code returns immediately or intermittently with no external cause, suspect BCM internal fault.
- Check for available software updates or TSBs; perform BCM reprogram/flash if an update is available and recommended.
- If reprogramming fails or code persists after verifying vehicle wiring and communications, consider replacement of the BCM. Replace with correct part number and program/configure to vehicle using factory-level tool.
- After repair or replacement, recheck for stored codes, perform full network scan, and verify all BCM-controlled functions operate normally before returning vehicle.
Likely causes
- Corroded/loose BCM connector or pin causing intermittent contact
- Battery low voltage during ignition/self-test (below ~11V)
- CAN bus termination problem or short to battery/ground on CAN lines
- BCM internal memory corruption or failed component
- Recent jump start, improper battery disconnect, or failed software update
